I think this works.

In Spanish it´s a "lengua de tierra" in the sea, perhaps joining a small island to the mainland.

This is an isthmus in more formal language.
I would go for "joined to the peninsula by a long, sandy spit".

tombolo

Explanation:

From dictionary.com
tombolo:
noun, plural -los.
a sand bar connecting an island to the mainland or to another island.

From RAE dictionary:
tómbolo.

(Del it. tombolo).

1. m. Lengua de tierra que une una antigua isla o un islote con el continente.

Another possibility:

isthmus: a narrow strip of land, bordered on both sides by water, connecting two larger bodies of land. (dictionary.com)

Hope this helps

sandbar

Explanation:
I think this fits your context best, given its size. Nice picture available if you google it.

A shoal or sandbar (also called sandbank) is a somewhat linear landform within or extending into a body of water, typically composed of sand, silt or small pebbles. A bar is characteristically long and narrow (linear) and develops where a stream or ocean current promote deposition of granular material, resulting in localized shallowing (shoaling) of the

Reference information:

agree  Richard Boulter: Great ref. So the translation could be: 'sandbar' if the sand is usually underwater; 'sand spit' if it is usually not covered by water; or possibly 'peninsula' if it never is [in which case the 'island' is not really an island]. Source context, here!
