The Castle Capari protects the southern reaches of the city of Arelenco, and overlooks the river itself. Widely considered to be impregnable, the castle is the most heavily defended fortress in the region. **Cannons jut out from the walls and towers**, and are able to rain fire down upon any vessels foolish enough to try and run the gauntlet without authority.

Explanation:
For asomar in this context I tend to change the order to keep the same feel. It's tourist info, right? The other answers are undoubtedly correct, though for me they sound a little like an engineering text.
The primitive building was a platform upon/from which cannons arose that protected this side/flank of the city centuries ago.
