Explanation:
In the original latin meaning of compass (com- 'together' + passus 'a step or pace') had to do with the space between two things. This original sense is preserved (as are many others) in the terminology of the church. As was pointed out, it can mean "foyer" or "antechamber" of a church or convent. However, it can also have the sense of an open space between two different buildings that people of often go between, such as a church and a convent (possibly "courtyard" as has already been suggested).

Here is my suggestion:

  • Until about two centuries ago, the Plaza de San Francisco (25) was bordered by the San Francisco church and convent.
  • Until about two centuries ago, there was a church and convent of the same name that opened on to the Plaza de San Francisco (25).
