Hello all,

This term crops up in an advertising booklet for a conference centre in Spain, as follows:

La provincia está preparada para atender las demandas del turismo de congresos. Para ello ofrece más de 23.500 plazas hoteleras y 3.300 apartamentos.

Friday is here, and my brain can't think of this! "Hotel beds" is not strictly correct, as a double bed would equal two "plazas hoteleras". The same applies to "rooms". I thought about "hotel spaces" but can't find much evidence for that anywhere.

Any ideas? I am sure I will kick myself when I see them!

Explanation:
Although the Collins Dictionary has "hotel beds" for the translation, I understand your concern. Possibly by rewarding it to something similar as suggested, you might give a more accurate translation. Of course this would not include any special bedding accommodations, such as an extra bed or crib, etc.

Explanation:
In tourism you can count either rooms or beds, if you count rooms a room with a double bed would count as 1 room, however if you are counting beds a room with a double bed counts as 2 beds because it has room for two people, the fact that only one person may sleep in it is irrelevant for this case. The term "plazas hoteleras" refers to the maximum amount of guests you could accomodate. I have been in hotel management for over 17 years.

Wil Hardman: I always thought this to be true: the amount of beds=amount of guests that could be accommodated. Not literally the amount of beds in the hotel.

The direct English translations seem to come out clunky, somehow...how about "working around" the Spanish version and trying something like:

"the province can accomodate over xx guests in hotels and (additionally) offers over xxx (short term rental) apartments..."

It is NOT easy to be accurate here, and sound right. Bedspaces sounds weirdly empty and cold to me.
