Spanish term or phrase: procesión por el real
At the San Benito Pilgrimage in Huelva:

Ya en la ermita, los romeros rezan el rosario en PROCESIÓN POR EL REAL, mientras los Lanzaores bailan al son del tamboril y la gaita.

English translation:Procession across the holy grounds
Explanation:
El real always refers to a specific place which is not limited by any kind of fences or walls but that everyone knows its borders. For example yoiu have "el Real de la Feria" in Seville where horse- drawn carriages and men/women on horse parade through the streets of the gorunds (also called el recinto despite, as I said, no fences or walls exist) following a set itinerary.
I hope it helps.

I can't help thinking that "fair"ground isn't quite appropriate here.

Example sentence(s):
  • En la ermita se reza el rosario, sale el santo en procesión y los Lanzaores bailan al son del tamboril.

agree  Emma Goldsmith: I like this one as it clearly refers to the chapel and not "fair ground" which has other connotations in English.

in procession across el Real

Explanation:
I wouldn't translate "el Real". I'd just put a note at the end of the page. ;)

I try to respect cultural symbols and explain them with footnotes. But I guess we all have our methods ;)

disagree  J C Alamo: Why not, Real just means grounds here. See Real 3 in http://buscon.rae.es/draeI/SrvltConsulta?TIPO_BUS=3&LEMA=rea... and you will see that it refers to a open field in which something is celebrated or someone is camping.

  -> I know what "el Real" is: I live in Spain ;) Thanks anyway. It's part of the culture of Andalucia (as far as I know, there isn't Real in any other part of Spain). That's the reason why I think it deserves an explanation on a footnote. That's how I work.

Real does not refer to holy grounds or church surroundings. The procession takes place along the fair grounds. In these popular Spanish events the sacred and the profane are inseparable.

agree  franglish: We arrived at the Real de la Feria site at 8:10pm. That did not leave much time to explore the hundreds of casetas spread along 3 avenues of the site. Not including the fairground attractions held at the bottom of the site. The last bus to Nerja was at 11
