It is a volcanic area, so it could well be volcanic ashes perhaps?

Uhmmm, I think it is not a "stone field" but "volcanic ashes". Then you CAN bury your legs in it. :-)

How is it possible to someone to run free with the legs buried down to the knee in this "rofera"? My research, so far, is leading me to believe that "rofera" is a kind of a "stone field" but it then doesn't fit the context at all.
