agree  Jesús Cordero-Salvado: Estoy de acuerdo con 'frontispiece', pero no con 'huge', no todos los monumentos tienen por que ser 'enormes'
6 mins
  ->  entonces "monumental frontispiece". Gracias!

monumental doorway

Explanation:
Portada also means doorway or entrance.

http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portada_(arquitectura)
Una portada es el conjunto de elementos arquitectónicos que forman la puerta y su ornamentación y en el cual aparece impreso con sus peculiares caracteres el estilo del edificio. Se dice principalmente de los monumentos arquitectócnicos religiosos.

I would suggest doorway especially since it is talking about access to the church.

Maybe entrance is better than doorway in this case.

agree  neilmac: It is indeed the entrance, so I end up agreeing with everyone...
34 mins
-> Portada can also mean doorway, Neil, especially ornamental ones. Have a look at the wikipedia link:http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portada_(arquitectura)

agree  Nikki Graham: but portal is the better term in this case

disagree  Nikki Graham: The Spanish would have used fachada if it meant the facade. This is referring to the doorway, i.e. the portal
1 hr
-> In my experience, "fachada" is just the front of any old thing, to me it lacks the more grandiose nuance of a gateway/portal (which BTW works well too), unlike facade in English which always sounds a bit French...

monumental entranceway

Explanation:
Yet another option! (and why not?! :)

Variations: 'entranceway', 'entrance way', 'entrance-way' or even 'entryway'

Direct Google hits are not great, admittedly, but many seem to refer to churches/cathedrals...

Reference information:
Have a look at the images of portadas in fachadas. Portada refers to the part of the facade where the door is.
