Spanish term or phrase:refugio
This is a term that has been translated for many years and in many places as ‘refuge’, but that for me would be a place where a frostbitten mountaineer tries to evade death. What I have to put into English is the idea of a small, well , hostel, really, equipped with bunks and shared rooms, bar, etc for people who wish to spend the night at the end of a day’s walking. ProZ glossary gives it as mountain shelter, my first draft (which I don’t like) says ‘refuge’, but I think it should be something like ‘hostel’. The problem is that “Walkers Hostel” gives a million and one hits about the same place in Ullswater, “Hikers hostel” gives a lot of hits in Bulgaria I don’t trust. The type of place I mean can be seen at: http://www.conselldemallorca.net/mediambient/pedra/doc/ruta....
Any ideas to put me out of my indecisive misery?
Many thanks
After all this fuss and botherI must confess that I was swayed by Jenni's comments, and have decided not to fly in the face of convention by translating the term as anything else than 'refuge'. Thank you Jenni. 4 KudoZ points were awarded for this answer
I escape to the Pyrenees frequently to a "refugio" that is described in English as a refuge. There are rooms of very basic beds, some of them bunk beds. Everyone must bring their own bedding. Food is served in the dining room/hall - breakfast and dinner and light food all day long. Most of these are run by municipalities or some other governmental entity to provide lodging for mountain climbers and hikers. Some are so inaccesible that all supplies are delivered by donkey. I don't know of any that are private hotels in any sense of the word. In Aragon they are tending toward ecological management - for example, asking people not to flush the used toilet paper, but rather, put it in a container, to enable the functioning of more natural water purification and septic systems. Apart from these "refuges" there are also smaller refuges that are like shepherds' huts where people can take cover from storms or camp for a night. Hope this helps. I know that in some places like this "lodge" might work.
No need to speculate, Martin! It's a web guide to GR trails in Balearics.
The link to the website I gave is a partial forerunner of some of this new text.
then if the refugios themselves are such a feature, perhaps the word could be considered to function almost as a proper name (but you haven't told us the nature of the text, so it remains pure speculation)
The term is a constant, reappearing frequently throughout the (long) text – and then has a chapter all to itself – well, all to themselves.
At present I’m kicking myself for not having at least thought of ‘lodge’ as suggested below, though indecision still reigns!
have you considered leaving it sin traducir?
if your text is about a particular place/area, then retaining the local terms for local features could be a valid strategy

Explanation: What I have always heard in the US was the term hostel being used for a small place, where you pay to stay overnight, usually in a room with other people. Basically, you pay for the bed you'll sleep on and that's it. Shelter gives me more the idea of a place where you don't have to pay to stay, a place you go to because you're in a bad situation, like you don't have anywhere else to go, because of a natural disaster or abuse, for example.
