Spanish to English translations [PRO] Tourism & Travel
Spanish term or phrase:colectividades
Hello, I need help to find an English equivalent for this word, it refers to places like schools, day care centers, hospitals, universities, residential homes, enterprises, etc. They are talking about catering services delivered to this sort of places.
Explanation: Yes, I know it's an amalgam of other answers, but I think this encompasses all the sorts of places listed by using a neutral word like "clients"
Seeing your comment, Ernesto, I can now only suggest "Industrial Feeding/Catering clients/customers" (optional - depending on the term you normally use). Hope this hits the target!
Sorry, but I don't think your suggestion is an "exact" term. The answer provided by Allegro Trans is a better choice, even though it is not the "official" term. It also gives an option for "colectividades" out of this specific context.
The truth is, Ernesto, I'm a bit surprised that you chose an answer put AFTER my last comment giving you this exact term! Not to worry! The main thing is that you got a correct translation! Cheers!
As a suggestion to your last comment, I'd like to simply offer "Industrial Feeding/Catering Equipment". Have you heard of "Hostelco" or "Alimentaria", 2 of the major industrial feeding/catering exhibitions in Europe, held at Montjuich in Barcelona every 2 years? There you'll see this term often used as the translation for the section on "Equipos para Colectividades".
You have provided a reason I might need to translate this:
"The official English name of the exhibition refers to "community equipment", but I don't think that's a very good translation"
Apart from that, I think it's a good idea to come up with a Spanish equivalent for this term, I am sure this won't be the last time a translator will have to deal with it.
Well, that puts a completely new light on it! I wish you'd provided context earlier. The official English name of the exhibition refers to "community equipment", but I don't think that's a very good translation. However, the first page of its website (http://www.hostelco.com) says it has "the biggest range of stands featuring the latest innovations in equipment, products and services for the hospitality, restaurant and *group catering* sector, which is close to Margaret's answer.
Why do you have to translate this anyway, if it already has an official English title?
I'm sorry I forgot to include context, but I think I am quite sure about the meaning of the word (yes, it also includes companies, events, etc.).
Context:
"Salón internacional del equipamiento para la restauración, hostelería y colectividades"
(It's an exhibition where they show equipment for hotels, restaurants and "colectividades")
Ernesto - could you provide the Spanish context please? Otherwise you're telling us what you think it means - we need to decide for ourselves.

Explanation: There is no one word equivalent to colectividades, as it is used to refer to public buildings and also public organisations of various kinds, as you describe. Often it refers to local authority controlled spaces. I've usually translated it as community buildings or community organisations depending on the context.
