Spanish to English translations [PRO] Art/Literary - Tourism & Travel | | Spanish term or phrase: ilustrados experimentos agropecuarios | | Las huertas son jardines agrícolas y los jardines huertas transformadas. Diseñadas a partir de ocultos contenidos simbólicos, de oscura motivación, las huertas históricas se configuran como extensas parcelas triangulares, resguardadas por las alamedas, destinadas al cultivo de exquisitas frutas y verduras y salpicadas de ilustrados experimentos agropecuarios y episodios para el recreo cortesano |
| | | enlightened experiments in farming | Explanation: In this historical context, in relation to the "huertas" of Aranjuez, the sense of "ilustrado" has to be "enlightened"; that is to say, "having or showing a rational, modern, and well-informed outlook" (Oxford). The word "ilustrado" in historical contexts specifically means "in accordance with the principles and approaches of the Enlightenment":
"ilustrado, da.
(Del part. de ilustrar).
1. adj. Dicho de una persona: Culta e instruida.
2. adj. Perteneciente o relativo a la Ilustración (‖ movimiento filosófico y cultural del siglo XVIII).
3. m. y f. Persona que participaba en el movimiento de la Ilustración."

Indeed, "Enlightenment experiments" would be a possibility here; but we don't know for certain that it refers specifically to the eighteenth century (these "huertas" were originally a sixteenth-century project started by Philip II), so the more general "enlightened" is safer, I think.
"Agrarian" is incorrect for "agropecuarios", because agrarian means specifically "relating to cultivated land or the cultivation of land" (Oxford), whereas "agropecuario" refers both to cultivation and to livestock (the "pecuario" part): "Que tiene relación con la agricultura y la ganadería" (DRAE). So you could say "experiments in cultivation and livestock", but I think "farming" covers both satisfactorily. |
