Yes I did check dictionaries before posting. I found water wheel and ferris wheel and I wanted to know what other translators considered appropriate in this context. I assume that's ok.
The waterwheels were not necessarily decorative or for recreation. In the Retiro park in Madrid, once the gardens of the Palacio del Buen Retiro, there is still a small section of a system of canals that was used by the king when he wanted to talk in private with someone (or simply enjoy himself). There was a waterwheel which made the water flow through the system thereby allowing little boats to flow along the canal with no need of rowing...probably too lowly a task for the king anyway...
