Spanish to English translations [PRO] Tourism & Travel / Animal husbandry- stud farming
Spanish term or phrase:yegüeros
Full context, describing a house on a walking route:
Casa de los ** yegüeros ** que cuidaban los rebaños equinos (burros, caballos y mulos), reconvertida desde hace unos años en refugio.
One online dictionary describes the word correctly, but not very usefully, as Keeper(s) of breeding mares. Another text mentioning the house says it " antiguamente era la estancia de los guardas de las yeguas en la finca" . Stable hands? Grooms? Stud farmers? Stud workers?
Explanation: According to the Vox Spanish English dictionary, the translation is keeper of a herd of horses. While the name yegüeros obviously refers to mares, I think because you just need to name the house on the route you can call it the horse keeper's house.
I think I prefer this option of yours. Liked Fiona's grooms, but it sounds a bit smart and Newmarkety for someone looking after the mules! Mareboys would be fun, but... But the reason I particularly like stable hands is that it is quite lowly and I think that is right in this context.

Asker: Yeees...... The problem is that I can't imagine - even say, 200/300 years ago - herds of anything other than tourists here in Mallorca, which is where the house is! Andalusia maybe. Here we go in more for flocks of sheep & goats, and always have. So I also have a problem with 'herds' in the text, of course!!!!
Explanation: According to the Vox Spanish English dictionary, the translation is keeper of a herd of horses. While the name yegüeros obviously refers to mares, I think because you just need to name the house on the route you can call it the horse keeper's house.

Thank you Rachel. An old fashioned term for an old fashioned occupation.
Explanation: Since it is in plural, I assume it would be stud hands. The one in charge and who has the most responsability is the stud master.
Stud hands are responsible for the welfare of number of thoroughbred mares and their foals. As well as mucking out, grooming and exercising the mares, the stud hand is also responsible for handling them during breeding and any visits by the vet or farrier. http://ukponies.com/employment.htm; With a horse breeding traineeship, you will start training as a stud hand before moving to work as a senior stud hand. andalusiansdemythos.com/spain/index.../page9.htm - En caché - Similares; A Stud Master is an individual responsible for an employer's breeding stock, the term is usually used of dogs or horses. It is usually applied regardless of gender; the term 'Stud Mistress' is rarely seen.
The Stud Master typically suggests desired matings to the owner, and arranges for the same, whether in-house or by contract with animals standing at stud, approves and arranges matings to the owner's animals at stud requested by outsiders, and keeps all records, including notifying the appropriate animal registries.
In a large or formal household the Stud Master may be a permanent position; in this case the Stud Master is often responsible for the maintenance of the stables and/or kennels as well, but usually it is a part time or contractual arrangement.

Explanation: The term "yegüeros" implies that the people are responsible for selecting pairs for mating and overseeing the process of expanding the herds, so I would indicate this in English, as they have received a certain training.
