agree  Steve Dreggs: In my opinion "give way" sounds much better than "yield" and "break their stride" is spot on. A perfect match for this context - better than rhythm and pace.

neutral  David Hollywood: this would cover it too IMO but I prefer the mediamatrix version .... just as an aside ... "yield" is used in the Republic of Ireland on road signs that read "Give way" in the UK but in this context I really prefer "give way"
