Explanation: Pétanques is the game played in France and the bowls are made of metal.
A similar game is played in England called bowls. These are made of wood and have a bias.
The most widely spread game is known as "bocce" (bochas in Spanish) and is played worldwide with slightly different rules from one country to another. The "bocce" are made of plastic. (I played this sport for 25 years and also gave the British "bowls" a try at a club with loads of British members).
Thanks, all the answers were helpful but the bocce inclusion helped me understand what game we were referring to. Cheers. 4 KudoZ points were awarded for this answer

Petanque
de:PetanquePetanque is a form of boules where the goal is to throw metal balls as close as possible to a jack (a small wooden ball called a cochonnet in French, which means piglet). The game is normally played on hard sand, but can also be played on grass or any other surface. Similar games are bocce and bowls.
