Iglesia de San Miguel en Paúles de Sarsa (Spain)

"La iglesia está dedicada a San Miguel, es de los siglos XVI-XVII, consta de una nave alargada con ábside rectangular y pegado a él la sacristía; a cada lado dispone de una capilla y el coro está a los pies. Todo el inmueble está cubierto con la bóveda de cañón bajo cubierta a dos aguas, encontrando tanto losa como teja. La puerta está situada al sur, protegida con atrio plano fechado en 1911. La torre, a los pies, es de un solo cuerpo con una campaña, aunque llegó a poseer tres. En el siglo XVIII se pintó el interior con colores y temáticas típicos del momento: vegetales, geometrismos, ***simulaciones arquitectónicas***, ventanas enrejadas, etc."

Presumably not "architectural simulations", since that gives a lot of computer-related hits on Google.

presumably these are paintings of buildings etc, in contrast to the geometric/plant and animal symbols mentioned before

Hi Hazel,

I don't see why it can't be architectural simulations, but here's another if you'd like different suggestions.

I think its more than a simple motif. It sounds like the sort of very realistic painting of perspectives to cheat the eye, making the place look bigger, for example. I'm sure these have a name in English, but I'm afraid I don't know it. Maybe someone else can pick up on it...

Ok, I found the term which, although French, is generally used in English. This is what I think is meant by \"simulaciones arquitectónicas\", therefore you might consider \"architectural trompes d\'oeil\". Refs:
