La tijereta es un pájaro notable por su larguísima cola compuesta por seis pares de plumas, siendo las más largas las laterales, que son las que le dan la forma característica.
El plumaje, de la cabeza y el lomo, es negro, mientras que el de la garganta, el pecho y el vientre, es blanco plateado.
Las plumas de la cabeza, en su parte más inferior, donde se insertan a la piel, tienen una coloración amarilla que únicamente llega a verse cuando las eriza, lo que no sucede con frecuencia.
El nido de la tijereta es circular, hecho con hojas secas y muchas veces con flores de cardo.
Su vuelo, realzado por la larga cola que mueve con gracia, es sostenido, sereno y muy elegante.
Se alimenta de gusanos, granos, frutas y algunos vegetales.
Tiene muchas características parecidas a la golondrina. Como esta ave, llega en primavera, para buscar en invierno los climas templados.
Los guaraníes la llaman jhuguay-yetapá (jhuguay: cola; yetapá: tijera).
