Il nome Lavapiés viene da una fontana che anticamente era situata al centro della piazza, dove la gente si lavava i piedi prima di accedere al tempio: questo quartiere è infatti uno dei più storici della città, antico ghetto. Proprio per questo le strade sono strette, e le case sono casas de corredor , cioè vecchie e di piccole dimensioni, costruite attorno ad un patio. Io ho vissuto a Lavapiés 6 mesi, con un bilancio davvero positivo…se non fosse per il grande, terribile e credo unico problema che affligge il quartiere: gli scarafaggi!
