Ho trovato le immagini della piazza e si capisce che in origine si trattava proprio di un piccolo spazio nato solo per fare da supporto ad un obelisco. Asker: Al centro della piazza potrebbe esserci una statua quindi la piazza potrebbe essere stata creata proprio per farle proprio da 'piedistallo' in senso largo

Explanation:
In molti casi mi sono trovata con l'uso di 'monumental' impiegato come 'imponente' e simili. Se è una piazza, può trattarsi di un uso traslato; come suggerito da Shrew che ti ha già risposto, ti suggerisco di verificare. :-)
