Swedish to English translations [PRO]
Bus/Financial - Accounting / Payroll form
Swedish term or phrase: kvarst sem
Appears toward the bottom of a payroll form. I assume "sem" is "semester".

Explanation:
I agree with zwanenbm that it could be risky to use an abbreviation. Vac. as an abbreviation of vacation seems to correspond well with sem used for semester (and since used is so short it doesn't have to be abbreviated).

Also, there is probably a separate entry for unused sick days. If so, then the sick days and the vacation days would have to be kept separate. I.e., neither could be translated on its own as PTO, since PTO would cover both vacation days and sick days.

Explanation:
I agree with zwanenbm that it could be risky to use an abbreviation. Vac. as an abbreviation of vacation seems to correspond well with sem used for semester (and since used is so short it doesn't have to be abbreviated).

PTO (paid time off)


Explanation:
Many companies have done away with "sick leave" and "vacation" as employee benefits and have replaced them with "paid time off" (PTO).
Paid time off is a bank of hours from which employees can draw. Employers credit additional hours to their employeess "banks", usually every pay period. Most US employers offer their workers 10 paid holidays, 2 weeks vacation, two personal days, and 8 sick leave days per year.

As I stated; the term include both vacation as well as sick leave and this is the common standard in the US. There is no single term used for unused vacation days only...!
Sometimes these simple facts render the translator to either use commonly used term with the addition of an explanation for clarification, or to invent a enirely new term...?

...looked thru old pay stubs and cannot find any other term then PTO used to specify how many vacation days I have left...
