Swedish term or phrase: knappast med någon ihärdighet
Visserligen utväxlades en del mail och man träffades någon gång men knappast med någon ihärdighet.

'......and we were shown little diligence on a number of occasions'?

hardly with any frequency
Explanation:
Here I interpret med ihärdighet as referring to both verbs, i.e. both the exchange of e-mails and the meetings, and that the meaning therefore is that there was little interest in keeping contact. And when relating to contact, I would interpret ihärdig as persistent, frequent. I would also be tempted to replace the word it with contact, but that would obviously depend on the full context. Some suggestions:
...and met a few times, but hardly with any frequency.
...but we hardly maintained any frequent contact.
(Or turn it around by replacing hardly with rather to something like (contact) was rather sporadic.)
Your own suggestion assumes that it was one-sided, but it could have been a lack of interest on both sides. But if you are sure, then I think this would be better:
...met a few times, but we were shown little interest.
