Explanation:
Much depends on what this building/house was used for and where it is. But it seems to be associated with Cultural/historical designation. And the bigger and fancier it is, the closer it gets to 'Corps de logis'--even in English. But calling it a 'pann' hus is sure a curveball.

Thanks for the additional details. I had envisioned this as perhaps some sort of historic structure that might be in the process of conversion to a modern use. Clearly Sven was more grounded in reality than I was.

Asker: This boiler house is part of an atomic power plant. I really find the term almost to be out of place here.

The dictionary translations do not seem to fit the context. I suspect that the author, in error, used "karaktärsbyggnad" instead of the correct expression "byggnad med karaktär".
