Swedish to English translations [PRO] Art/Literary - Slang | | Swedish term or phrase: svartskalle | A teenager goes into a chat room and this is what people are saying in the chat room. My dictionary gives "wog" or "wop," which seem to be both outdated and British. I'm looking for a way to explain this to American teenagers...

I would say that your best choice would be either "nigger" (ouch!) or one of the several derogatory terms for Latinos. The latter have the advantage of conveying a specifically *foreign* accent, while an African-American speech pattern would convey the "ghetto" image I think the original text can give rise to in the Swedish mind. You do need to use a derogatory term, unfortunately, as "svartskalle" is definitely derogatory in Swedish.
Very tough problem. Best luck. :-) |
