Tagalog term or phrase: lihi
I have struggled for 10 years to get a firm grasp on what this means. So I was just curious to get all of your inputs.

If you say someone is "naglilihi", does it just mean that they are pregnant and having a "craving" for something, like something very salty, for example?

But what about when Filipinos say, for instance, that their baby turned out a certain way (for example, the baby was very fair-skinned) because when the mother was pregnant, "pinag-lihian niya ang isang puting tao." That certainly doesn't mean she was "craving a white person".

Anyway, just curious as I've never completely understood this word.

Thanks in advance.

Explanation:
"Naglilihi" - This describes the symptoms of early
pregnancy.... strange/too much liking or hate, strange food cravings, mood swings, morning sickness... So it's not only "craving". So "kung pinaglihian niya ang isang puting tao", probably she hated this man or liked this man very much. Maybe she always liked looking at this person or always noticed his or her nose or lips or a part of his body or the things he or she does. HTH.

Explanation:
No direct equivalent, as Leny says. The "craving" is for food (which is so weird, pinaglihi ako sa lansones, I'm told, but once they bought her the fruit, she just stashed it in a suitcase till it spoiled. Maybe that's why I like to travel). Pregnant women may make "lihi" on people, but that's not usually (considered or otherwise) a sexual craving. I've heard a statue of the Baby Jesus recommended, for example :)

(I got the equivalent from my Spanish dico, to which "lihi" translates as "antojo". [Secondary meaning, "capricho", a whim.]Curiously, "antojo" also means a birthmark and in Spain also refers to pregnancy cravings).

Explanation:
google 'pregnancy' + 'craving'. you'll find a lot of stuff.

Cravings may not be limited to food. There is a non-food craving called pica.

Pica and Pregnancy : American Pregnancy AssociationMost pica cravings involve non-food substances such as dirt or chalk. ... 25-30% of all children; pica cravings in pregnant women are even less common. ...
