Thai term or phrase: แหล่งมั่วสุม
in a negative meaning
Mark Varnado
Thailand
Local time: 06:37
English translation:Place of misconduct
Explanation:
General-level term describing place where people gather for bad conduct, as described by narttida above. Recommend using more specific term if nature of misconduct is specified, eg. drug house, gambling den. However, if you are translating something like "ตำรวจจับตาเน็ตคาเฟ่หวั่นเป็นแหล่งมั่วสุม" you will need a general-level term.

Sorry, example sentence apparently too long. It should read: บางแห่งก็กลายเป็นแหล่งมั่วสุมของเด็กและเยาวชน ซึ่งเป็นเรื่องที่สำนักงานตำรวจแห่งชาติมีความห่วงใย

In some cases, 'hangout' or 'trouble spot' may also work.

Thanks for all the quick responses. I agree with this one most since the case in the text I was working on was in a more general scenario.

Well, then, take your pick: sewer, gutter, pit, sink, sink of corruption, den of iniquity, den of sin, den, fleshpot, hellhole, opium den, drug house, etc. It's true that 'den of thieves' is more accurately a ซ่องโจร or แหล่งซ่องสุม . I was going for a suitably colorful idiom rather than an explanation; nobody but the schoolmarm or the prosecutor actually says 'place of misconduct' in conversation.

disagree  narttida: แหล่งซ่องสุม is den of theives. แหล่งมั่วสุม means place where people gather for bad conduct(s), usually those against social norms or laws, such as, drugs, gambling or prostitution

neutral  Michael Sloggett: I had previously agreed with "den of thieves" but I was wrong, narttida is right. Looking for suitably general English equivalent. 'Place of misconduct' is one idea but we wouldn't use it in most cases where แหล่งมั่วสุม is used.
