I agree that the exact translation will depend on the general tone of the text. That being said, the sentence that the asker posted is uttered by the driver's assistant and not by one of the hitchhikers, i.e. not one of the people who bummed a lift. So "anafor" does not refer to hitching a free ride. It has more of a "dying for nothing", "dying in vain" connotation. Moreover, they do pay for the ride:
"Kısa bir pazarlıktan sonra ellişer kuruşa şoförün yanına binmek hususunda mutabık kaldık."
If we do not stress the "anafor" bit, the whole line can be loosely translated as:
"Hope we won't have any trouble. We will meet our maker if he goes on like this. Prod him if he doses off again."
