Hi, I am trying to proofread a text in Wordfast. Somehow Wordfast changes every number it encounters. In this case I have a schedule, so 16:30 is changed to 16:00, 17:45 to 17:00 - it seems to retrieve the best fuzzy from the TM.

What I've tried:

- I deactivated Automatic propagation and suggestions
- I commited all segments to TM
- I deactivated and activated the option "Use Replaceables for higher TM matches" > Replace numbers - neither option works

This is driving me crazy - I have to be extra careful not to leave the wrong numbers in this file.

Please help!

Best regards and thank you for your time,
Anna

Classic or Pro? Oct 23, 2014

Classic or Pro?

Is the document that you proofread already translated in the document itself, or are you "retranslating" it segment by segment against the TM?

I am using Pro, but I am afraid I don't understand your second question...

Use a different shortcut Oct 23, 2014

Hello Anna,
You are re-leveraging the TM each time. You can use ctl+down arrow and it won't do this.

Best,

John

No way to switch it off? Oct 24, 2014

Hi John,

I ultimately ended up doing it like that.

But is there a way to commit the present segment into the TM without leveraging the TM for the next segment?

I must admit, I really prefer working with SDL Studio or memoQ - Wordfast seems so... rudimentary. And it's ugly, as well. But the client wants Wordfast and uses server TMs, so there is no way around it.

Thanks for your help!

What I mean is this: do all the segments below the current segment already have translations in them? Or are those segments empty, and only get text in them when you get to them? I'm just curious to know whether WFP actually overwrites the current text with something in the TM.

==

By the way, the problem with Wordfast is that it doesn't store all segments with numbers, in the TM. If you have these three segments: "there are 2 sheep. there are 3 sheep. there are 4 sheep" then Wordfast stores only the first segment in its TM, and tries to update the number. However, if the number is "complex" (e.g. if it's right up against another character), Wordfast won't update the number, and then you have to do it manually. I've had similar frustrations with texts that contain lots and lots of similar number-containing segments, and Wordfast stores only one instance of it in its TM. If I remember correctly, this was done to make TM look-up faster. I know of no way to force Wordfast (Classic or Pro) to store *all* segments in its TM and to serve all of them as well.

Run a QA report afterwards Oct 24, 2014

After you're done with the translation, go to the PM perspective (a tiny icon on the left that looks like an ice cream scoop over a piece of paper), and then to go the "Transcheck/Revisions" tab, and drag-and-drop your TXML file into the file list window. Then you can run a check on it, and then hopefully number differences will come up in the report.

It overwrites the existing translation Oct 24, 2014

Wordfast overwrites the current translation. It is extremely strange. Especially after commiting all the segments to the TM I would expect this behaviour to stop.

Replaceables Oct 24, 2014

Dear Colleagues,

I am trying to answer a couple of questions that have been asked here:

1- You can check the option "Use Replaceables for higher TM matches" (Edit > Preferences > Translation Memory). When the only difference between two segments is in numbers, this will automatically replace the numbers in such fuzzy matches instead of offering them with incorrect numbers from old translated sentences stored in the TM.

2- To commit the current segment to th

Dear Colleagues,

I am trying to answer a couple of questions that have been asked here:

1- You can check the option "Use Replaceables for higher TM matches" (Edit > Preferences > Translation Memory). When the only difference between two segments is in numbers, this will automatically replace the numbers in such fuzzy matches instead of offering them with incorrect numbers from old translated sentences stored in the TM.

2- To commit the current segment to the TM without leveraging the current one, you need to press Alt+End to commit the current segment, and then Ctrl+Down to move to the next segment without leveraging the TM.

3- You can go to Edit > Preferences > Translation Memory and check the option: Perform TM Lookup automatically > OK. Now, every time you move to a segment using either Ctrl{+}Down or the mouse, you will see all its words in the TM Lookup textbox which will be automatically searched.

TO WORDFAST DEVELOPERS: It will be very useful to have a shortcut combining the two functions of Alt+End and Ctrl+Down. In some occasions, I created a AutoHotkey script for users for the purpose; so it will help to have such shortcut, i.e. Next Segment (TM Commit + No Leverage), built in Wordfast Pro for "Proofreading" purposes as it has been inconvenient so far. In my opinion, what can make it rather perfect is to have this shortcut commit the current segment to the TM, and then leverage the next TM in the bottom pane, but not in the target cell; this is different from the automatic TM Lookup which requires moving using the mouse or Ctrl+Down and which will not commit the current segment to the TM; so we end up needing two moves while it is better to have one move, and actually what is required is not concordance search but rather TM leverage but without overwriting the existing translation to be proofread. Many thanks!

Kind regards,
Yasmin

Thank you! Oct 27, 2014

Dear Yasmin,

Thank you very much for your advice!

I am afraid that I have still some other option active, because "Use Replaceables for higher TM matches" didn't work for me. Your suggestions to the developers are priceless - I hope this will be implemented!

Best regards,
Anna
