Seconded, Tom Aug 4, 2015

I was going to raise this today, when I'd calmed down enough after discovering yesterday that my own profile has been copied to their site. That particular "feature" only concerns ProZ.com "P" badge holders, apparently.

This one concerns all registered users, I believe. Personally, I would never upload my TMs to their site. I'm rather too long in the tooth to do totally naive things like that. But it does concern me greatly that this carrot is being placed before young and/or inexpe

This one concerns all registered users, I believe. Personally, I would never upload my TMs to their site. I'm rather too long in the tooth to do totally naive things like that. But it does concern me greatly that this carrot is being placed before young and/or inexperienced translators. Imagine you've been an isolated freelancer for a year or two before you discover ProZ.com. It seems to be the answer to so many of your needs. The site encourages you to complete your profile as fully as possible, so you're going to try to comply. You click on the link and the first thing you have to do is register there too. You now have a TM-Town profile as well as a ProZ.com one. And TM-Town are saying they can get you loads of work, too. You just have to upload those TM's you've generated, just as ProZ.com asked. You're probably going to do it, aren't you? You won't consider all the ethical and business considerations of the act. This isn't an unsolicited email you've received, after all.

Why is ProZ.com trying so hard to get us all registered on TM-Town? Why are they inciting us to give our TMs to them? Yes, maybe they'll be private and confidential today, but will they stay that way? All I can be sure of is that they will stay that way if they never leave my computer.

I don't like it any more than you, Tom. And as I write this, there's a flashing banner above the text exhorting me to "SIGN UP TODAY".

Tom, if you don’t like the f̶u̶t̶u̶r̶e̶ feature, don’t use it. There is no need to remove it entirely. Don’t worry, only you can see the text you mentioned. Profile visitors won’t see it at all.

Your profile would not (should not) have been copied Aug 4, 2015

Sheila Wilson wrote:

Hi Sheila. I don't know if my prior reply to you was clear enough, but strictly speaking, your profile would / should not be copied by any site using ProZ.com's API. The API works like directory search... only information that anyone could get by going to your profile (and in fact much less) is available through the API. And you can turn it off if you don't want this sort of potential additional exposure to potential clients outside of ProZ.com.

I'll post the rest of my reply to you for the benefit of others who may be first reading about this here.
To give you some background, the API's are provided so that potential clients may conveniently search for translators beyond the confines of ProZ.com. (We consider opportunities to meet clients to be one of the core things we offer in the membership suite, so we feel that adding to the stream of potential clients in this way is consistent with serving members.) We don't scrutinize API users very carefully on issues such as rates, business practices, etc., since any API partner could just use ProZ.com, and anyway, we think it is up to members to choose who they work with an under what conditions.

The API's have been available for many years, but it is only recently (this year) that they have begun to be used significantly. Your posting, and the recent increase in activity (at TM-Town, Motaword, etc.), makes me realize that now would be a good time to remind/inform all of our members of the existence of the API's, and the option to opt out -- which is here: http://www.proz.com/?sp=settings_tpx_api (We have the option to opt out entirely now, we will be adding the option to opt out on a partner by partner basis.)

Our apologies for not getting notifications out about this sooner!

I don't think that's correct. It shows up in the "Visitor view".

I believe I ought to have the option of deciding what appears/doesn't appear in my profile.

Are you sure about this? I just went to my profile, and sure enough, there was the ("Want to put your portfolio to work for you elsewhere? […]") text, in the Portfolio section. I then clicked on "Force visitor view", and it was gone. That is, profile visitors won’t see it at all.

I think you are mixing up two different things:

(1) The "Want to put your portfolio to work for you elsewhere? […]" text on your profile (applies to everyone; not just "P" badge holders)
(2) Proz translators showing up on the TM-Town website (@ https://www.tm-town.com/translators )(via ProZ.com's API)(applies only to "P" badge holders)

Are you sure? Google says "Your search - Sheila Wilson site:.tm-town.com/translators/ - did not match any documents." but similar searches for translators whose names appear on TM-Town's home page do come up in searches.

My "TM" Aug 4, 2015

I'm a "P" and I see from my Proz profile today that the offer to join TM-Town is there. I haven't touched it and don't intend to.
I don't think I could send TM-Town any TMs anyway because, as far as I know, I don't have any - except the one in my early Jurassic brain. Shall I try sending them that? Might be a bit messy ...

See: http://www.proz.com/forum/business_issues/289034-strange_email_about_a_new_service.html

"Hi Sheila,

In the TM-Town directory, below results of TM-Town members, additional translators are shown from ProZ.com. These results are produced using ProZ.com's public API and show ProZ Certified members matching the criteria of the search.

I have removed you from these results, and I am happy to remove anyone who requests the same. As John mentioned you can also opt-out of the ProZ.com API by adjusting your ProZ.com settings.

I'm sorry to have upset you.

Best regards,
Kevin

Hello all,

This is Kevin and I am the developer of TM-Town. For the background on some of the discussion here I would point you to this thread; however, I would like to clarify a few things about the ProZ.com API results shown on TM-Town:

1) No profile is created. The only profiles on TM-Town are for translators that have signed up for TM-Town, period.

2) When a search is made in the TM-Town directory additional results obtained from the ProZ.com public API may be shown below TM-Town members. The results from ProZ.com are not stored in ANY TM-Town database. They are queried each time a search is made. The results returned from ProZ.com are public data such as your name, language pairs, fields of expertise and a link to your ProZ.com profile.

Sheila made it clear she did not want to appear in the results on TM-Town and I immediately removed her. I am happy to remove anyone else that requests the same. As Henry mentioned in the other thread, it is also possible to change your settings on ProZ.com to not appear in the API results.

Kevin
