PLEASE PLEASE HELP! I also posted this question on the sdl forum, but haven't gotten any responses yet.
I obviously do not understand options for sending return packages. I am a new Trados 2015 user, and this is my first time using a CAT tool. I am attempting to send return packages on different projects to a customer, but the customer says they cannot be opened correctly. I obviously do not understand options for sending return packages. I am a new Trados 2015 user, and this is my first time using a CAT tool. I am attempting to send return packages on different projects to a customer, but the customer says they cannot be opened correctly. Here's what I do: complete translation of file, verify file, finalize file, then click on the icon to create a return package. Then everything seems to go smoothly - I get a message that the return package will include a .sdlxliff file, and then a return package is created to the location I specify for the file. But when my customer gets the package, they claim all they receive is the target file, when what they want to receive is the .sdlxliff file. Another time, they claimed all they received was the target file for one of the files in the project, and the .sdlxliff file for the other file in the project. I don't understand how I can control what ends up in the package. I want to create a package that includes both the target file and the .sdlxliff file, I guess. How do I access these different options? I can't open the package to see what's in it after the fact - the program says I'm not allowed to open packages I created. I know I am sending a return package, because the file name ends in .sdlrpx. The customer claims I'm just creating target files, but how could I be if they have this file name ending?
Can someone help me understand what I'm doing wrong? I have to solve this problem or I will lose this client, and it's very important to me. I am having a lot of trouble getting started with Trados. ▲ Collapse

I am following the instructions on the linked page exactly, yet I am experiencing the problems I mentioned.
Someone on the SDL forum page just said I should NOT finalize the project files before creating the return package. Is this true? If so, what function does finalizing the files perform, and when would you do it?

I am not totally certain what happens when you finalise the project, but at least the following would happen:
- Translation memories are updated
- Cleaned translation files are exported from the project (i.e. Word, Excel or whatever)
- I also believe the project then is marked as completed (which I think is what creates problems for the client)
It is, of course, useful to export the translated files for your own last check, but in general I would let the client take care of that. Often the source files have a format that I cannot handle anyway, for instance InDesign files or whatever. But exporting the translated files could be done as a separate step without finalising the project.
Hope the above does clarify things a little.

what are the source files they sent to you?? Did they send you the project package for each project?
as I understand, seems like you combined all files from many projects and messed them up in a return package?
if what they want is .sdlxliff file.
Why don't you just open the folders you have created when you open the project files.
You will find sdlxliff files there so you can send them to the client and don't have to create the return packages.

OK, excellent, so no finalizing of files - apparently, although I get a message clearly stating that my package will include the .sdlxliff file after finalization, it simply doesn't do it. Must be a bug. I will not finalize files, and I will send the return package + .sdlxliff file separately, just to be sure.

Just one question here: Did the customer send you a project package, and asked that you should return a package? Or did you create a package so you could return it?
Normally one would only send a return package if one receives a project package (not a zip file with sdlxliff files) from the customer.

Hi Roy: Yes, the customer sent me a project package and requires a return package. Otherwise this would all be so much simpler!

Make a copy of your sdlrpx (for safety).
Then rename sdlrpx to zip.
Open the zip file to see what is in there.
Normaly you have 4 items: source folder, File Types folder, target folder and sdlproj file.
Is that what you see?
Also go to the target folder to check if it includes all files from the original package.
