Practicount or Anycount etc. Dec 22, 2005

Hi DV1,

Practicount or another count program, e.g. Anycount, should help you to do a wordcount of a pdf - as far as I'm aware, there is no way of doing it within Acrobat itself, unless Version 6.0 has a new feature.

Good luck!

Word/character count - PDF files Dec 22, 2005

Simply open the PDF file in KWord, then File > Statistics > Text to call up word counts, character counts, etc. You can also then save the file as MS Word, RTF, OOo etc.

If you have Linux, of course.

Use the clipboard + Word Dec 22, 2005

Just copy your pdf document to the clipboard, paste it on to a Word document and use the Word word count - the whole operation should take less than a minute for a 50-page pdf...

No problem ... Dec 22, 2005

... glad you got it sorted. I find Practicount pretty intuitive to use and some of the options - like excluding numbers, etc - are also quite useful. I started off with a trial version but ended up buying it because before I knew about it I was doing Powerpoint counts by copying them into Word and it took up a lot of extra time.

Merry Christmas to you too!

Sarah

PDFs made from scanned text? Dec 22, 2005

I'd like to take the opportunity and ask you guys whether the word count tools you've mentioned is able to "read" PDFs which have been created from scanned documents...

In other words, I have no problems when working with PDF files which were created from any text editor or design program (including Word and PageMaker), but whenever the PDFs are created from a scanned document and, therefore, become an image, I usually charge my clients for the target file.

Does PratiCount, AnyCount, or any other tool with which you're familiar have the ability to perform such word count? Well, let me know 'cause I'm planning my budget for next year and could buy one of their licenses.

Thanks!

Any OCR program Dec 22, 2005

will read your scanned PDF file and then you can count words with counting programs (or see the count in Word, but be careful there- OCR creates textboxes and Word doesn't count words in these, while word counting software - I use Practicount- does).

And no, no word counting soft at the moment does read scanned PDFs as they doesn't contain any text, just an image. Maybe in future they will make a soft "two in one"... See more

We count target only in cases the original PDF, fax, jpg, whatever is of so low quality that OCR program cannot satisfactory read it.
