Would it be useful to have a book review section? Thread poster: Mihai Badea (X)

Sometimes I’d like to buy a dictionary or a book that would help me to enhance my knowledge on a certain subject, but many times I do not manage to find reviews on it. That’s what made me think that I’d like to have a section dedicated to book reviews, here, on Proz.com. I would see it as a database searchable by multiple criteria, so that you can easily find reviews about what you are interested in. Actually, it could be helpful in two ways. I would see it as a database searchable by multiple criteria, so that you can easily find reviews about what you are interested in. Actually, it could be helpful in two ways. Firstly, if you want to find comments on a book, you would search for reviews on that book. Secondly, if you decide that you’d like to buy a book about, let’s say, stock market, you would be able to see all the reviewed books on the subject. This would help you to make your mind about what book would best suit your specific needs. I guess it would be a lot of work for the staff to implement this idea (and for us to enter the reviews). But, what do you think, would it be worth the effort? ▲ Collapse | | | You're reading my mind! | Jan 9, 2006 |
Yes, I've been thinking about it and I'd love to see this feature implemented! Many times I needed advice on a dictionary I wanted to buy or needed a book on a specific subject but didn't know which one is best. Also, I'd love to share my opinion on some books I have and recommend them to fellow members. As I see it, the book review section could be made in the BB style, with members awarding points - apart from writing the reviews/comments, of course. It would be grea... It would be great if one could browse for books in various language pairs and fields. Thanks for bringing this up, Mihai! Count me in! Some sort of "dictionary board" has been suggested several times by several people and there has never been any answer from above (as far as I am aware). I am all for it. It would have been very useful before I spent hundreds of pounds on dictionaries, some of which have turned out to be a waste of shelf space. So, please.... Is there anyone listening out there? Is this ever going to happen?

I think it is an excellent idea. Now people ask about or recommend dictionaries in the forums, while it would be much more efficient to have all that information available in one place. A set-up like the BB sounds fine.

Thanks for the links Nikki. So, raffaella prati was the first to have this idea, in 2002, then the subject was reopened by Ruben Berrozpe, xxxjmf and Bill Smyth. Well, I think they were right. Thanks to all of you for supporting this idea. | | | Lakshmi Iyer France Local time: 12:16 French to English + ... Excellent idea | Jan 9, 2006 |
I've just been on the Internet looking for information on Italian-English dictionaries to add to my collection and the biblit.it site has some recommendations in its dictionary section that I found very useful. I'd love to see something like this implemented on Proz.com for the various languages. What about recommending a BB-style dictionary review as part of the Top 10 suggestions the site owners are currently encouraging Platinum members to send in?
