I am not aware whether this has already been discussed here or not as I have joined the site only recently. Sorry fo duplication, if any.

Could some senior please guide me as to how:

1. I can count the words on a PDF document?

2. I can copy/ paste a portion from a pdf document to a Word doc?

Thanks in advance and regards to all.

aburiaz

Copy and paste from a PDF doc Apr 11, 2006

Hi!
1. I hope someone will be able to show how we can count words on these documents. I still don't know. All I am aware of is software out there which can be bought to do this. Maybe someone will be able to advise on one of these software applications for counting words in PDF docs.

2. Copying and pasting from PDF files, I can do. There is a camera icon in the toolbar of your PDF/Adobe application when you have a PDF doc open. Click on this, then outline the section of text you want to copy. This appears to take a photographic image of this section.
Then in your Word doc, you just right click your mouse to "paste", where you want the text to be. This remains in this document as an image.

Hope this helps somewhat.

Counting words in PDF Apr 11, 2006

The answer to your first question lies in your second section. Convert the PDF file into editable format (eg DOC, RTF) and count the words there. There have been many previous discussions about software for doing this.

Check your editable version carefully against the PDF original, because there may be text held as graphics. I once received a PDF with 3 pages. The first and third were text, the second page was a graphics snapshot of the text originally on page 2. Therefore the words

As to the .pdf > txt/rtf/doc conversion, there's quite a few tools out there, some free, most of them just don't cut it... haven't had the... errr...time, lol to try out some of the rather expensive complex solutions, but Acrobat's paper capture sometimes does the trick, and if it doesn't, you should try Readiris Pro or some other OCR software...

Happy solution hunting!

1. Unfortunately PDF does not have a word count. What we do is to: select it, and copy it into MS Word, and go from there. 2. PDF lets you select and copy, UNLESS it's a SECURED format where the originator, or author DOES NOT want for anybody to copy in part or in whole the document. There are the two forms. Good question , though. Francisco

Translator's Abacus Apr 9, 2009

Pike's suggestion is a good one. I just downloaded Translator's Abacus, and it performed a word count of a .pdf file easily.

Doesn't seem to be accurate with pdf Mar 12

I just tried DocuCount on a document I am working on. I had previuosly manually converted the pdf to Word using ABBYY Finereader 15. This Word document has 226 pages (as does the pdf) and 52330 words. Almost all the words are plain text, some text over an image, but no text as an image.

DocuCount's count had only 118 pages and 23696 words, a far cry from the real number. It's a good thing that I hadn't quoted based on DocuCount's figures.
