Hello

Could any one help me on this one?

When translating from English into Spanish, it is recommended normally to change the English double quotation marKs ("") to «».

Hello

Could any one help me on this one?

When translating from English into Spanish, it is recommended normally to change the English double quotation marKs ("") to «».

Now. I have to make a test translation. I have been given a series of instructions to do this (eg.: using Trados, changing some segmentation rules in TWB...) and one of the instructions simply tells me to change double quotation marks from
"xxx" to ...

I assume this mean to «», but why they specify it like this? Do I have to change some Trados settings including this tags? Or to check that the settings are correct? (if so, how?) Do you know what this is?

I would be very grateful if anyone could reply as soon as possible. Thank you very much in advance.

P.S.: I have started and I seem to be getting quotation marks in Tag Editor as Placeables (eg: ldq xr rdq). Maybe this means that the settings are right and I am lucky this time. But how does one check it?

P.S. 2: Actually, this:

(page 17)

has been turned into a placeable also when I should translate the word "page". How could I define or amend what is turned into Placeables? Is there an easy way of amending this (I haven't got much time to send this in).

Thanks,

Marta

You're lucky. Although the syntax is unfamiliar to me, reads like &dquo which is the left double quote entity. The other one is the right double quote &rdquo.
(I've omitted the ; because &c)

So they're you're opening and closing quotation marks, and they are "double" not 'single' ones.

Hi

Source document: I believe it is originally a PDF. The agency has got it all ready for me and if opened with a double click it looks very much like the layout of XML. It is an rtf doc that I have to translate in Tag Editor.

Problem?: I am worried about not translating the quotes (into «») and about the "page 17" turning up as a placeable. Maybe it is something to do with the rtf doc I have been sent. If the agency has turned this into placeables, it may well be because they do not want me to amend anything in the first place. If I have to amend the placeables, I would not know how to do it, though.

Other unknown things/problems: I have been sent a file called "ancillary" by the agency, it is an rtf full of -just- tags. Maybe a silly question, but do I have to add this somewhere? maybe in the Tag Settings Manager?

Extra info: when I open the file in Tag Editor all looks as it would normally, though I spot that one of the tags at the very beginning of the file says "ancillarymode 0" (what is this?).
--------------------
Well, I hope someone can answer so I do not have to study all the Help section in Trados to get the solution.

Sorry for so many questions, obviously a bit at a loss this time, and thank you in advance.

Regards,

Marta

in a hurry & quoting from FileFormats ref guide:
""Ancillary file: TRADOStag, RF or txt-only file generated during conversion of MIF/ISACII to STF w/ S-Tagger. The ancillary file contains schared text that cannot be accessed in the STF file but requires translation.""

you source ORIGINALLY is e.g. a Framemaker or Interleaf file (or... [it doesn't matter]) exported into Maker Interchange Format (MIF) or the other one (IASCII) that was then converted by S-Tagger (you shd have this) into an STF file: that is what was deliverd to you (the rtf = STF [S Tagger File is how I understand it])

Does this solve anything? Not much.

One thing, though: if those quotation marks (if indeed they are that) TAGS are rendered by the right tags all is okay.

why has p 17 become a placeable? because there is some instruction in the DTD (Tag Properties) that sets anything between those tags as untranslateable? I am not in the least sure. It could be a clickable p 17 (a link). Try translating it after it's been dropped into the Target segment. If it refuses to be changed, don't try again. Treat is like you would same (hyperlinks) in a word doc/workbench translation: carefully: don't delete them but edit them working from within.

Have a look at the ancillary file looking at it as a seperate file to be translated.

Don't forget the bill for the extra work involved (and soddy instructions)

Don't know if you're using 7.5 but the File Formatsd ref is a pretty good help if you've got the actual thing before you

Hi Saitch

They did not mention in the instructions anything about the ancilliary, so hopefully it would be ok.

I will definitively look into everything you mentioned so I am ready for next time! I will edit this with the findings.

Great help!

Kind regards,

Marta

Follow up:
- At the end, had to send again everything in order to include the translation of the ancilliary file.

- Guess what!, in the ancilliary file is where I had to translate the word "page" that had been turned into a placeable in the other file...!!! All so simple, afterwards...

- Thanks so much for putting me in the right direction! Yes, I have Trados 7.5. I have flicked through the guide I guess you referred to and things are getting much clearer, will look in detail later. Anyway, in it ("S-Tagger user guide", downloadable from http://www.translationzone.com/download.asp?menuItem=3) it explains what the ancilliary file includes. Quoting:

"For FrameMaker sources, the ancillary file includes text found in:
* master pages
* paragraph numbering formats
* variables
* cross-reference formats
* element prefixes and suffixes (...)
* footnote prefixes and suffixes"
