when you use Trados Jan 7, 2007

Hi, I am also wondering why from time to time there are jobs offered in Porz.com with millions of words requiring TRADOS as a must! You do not see small jobs requesting TRADOS that way. Why is that?

imho it is a requirement from a big client in order to get discount for Trados repetitions and fuzzy matches.

If a translator does not use Trados it is very difficult to convince him*her to charge less.
When the Trados is used a translator is "ready" to accept an idea of granting discounts for Trados repetitions by default

Just imagine you need to translate a manual for a real estate broker. There is such document in the text. With cat tool you translate any field only once. Next time you meet it (while moving through next segments) wordfast/trados looks through the TM and automatically inserts a translation into the target segment field. You do not type it again, it emerges from the depths of the TM. All you do - confirm it and move to a next segment.

In case of the document shown below it is possible to assume that translation took about 70-75% less time (with the help of CAT)

Why Trados Jan 7, 2007

There are several possible reasons:

- To use an existing TM and ensure consistency with previous translations
- To create a TM for future new versions of the document
- To lower the costs, as Sergei already explained above

I do not use TRADOS or something similar. I convert my translations into PDF and use the search tool of PDF if necessary. Or I use Google-Desktop to find previous translations of terms. All this is for free.

Do you search for every single sentence this way? Or every single word, if you have a terminology glossary? Because that's what a CAT tool does automatically for you.

you can do better than this... Jan 10, 2007

.. Of course, with WordFast you can only do small to medium-sized projects - that is, you can create Translation Memory(ies) of up to 500 segments. On one of my projects, I had to do two TMs, one for the product descriptions and another for the About Us, Privacy Statement, etc., because putting all of that in one TM exceeded the 500 limit. However, this did not present a problem. Someday I plan to purchase a WordFast license, which will remove the 500-segment limit, but for now it is serving the purpose very well. I agree that having the source and target text right next to each other greatly boosts productivity.

I can say that this limitation is not so strict.

Now I manage to work in wordfast using two TM's with 983 and 1047 records.

You can see this from the link below:

You probably know by now that you can use Automated Translation (like Google Translate) with Trados Studio 2009, which will populate machine translation into the text boxes on the right, which you can then proof.
