Hi.
I have two questions:

1. Can words be counted directly in a Power Point file?

2. If I use Practicount will it include the notes or just the slides?

Thanks

Hi Sandra Apr 2, 2007

For the number of words in PowerPoint go to File > Properties; and select the “Statistics” tag. It shows both the words on the slides and on the notes page. But it will not show the number of words in those textboxes that were added manually.

Powerpoint Apr 2, 2007

I´ve always charged by the hour for Powerpt stuff. A bind to have to keep noting down timing if you can´t do it all at one stretch, but even if you could count the words I don´t think it would be satisfactory since you have to tinker around so much to get the words into the various tables etc. Unless there was a reliable wordcount and we could calculate a higher rate for this format...

On the other hand, I have appreciated translating some powerpoint files in the past because the pictures made some of the terms and technical vocab so much easier to decipher!

H Henrik,

Thank you for your reply. Do you know if Practicount counts the notes AND the slides?

Hi Sandra again Apr 2, 2007

Sorry, I’ve never used Practicount, I can’t say. Usually I use the above method to count words in PowerPoint files. I think you can check this if you have Practicount. Create a blank PPT document, type two words in a slide and two words in the notes page, and see the results of Practicount. Or maybe someone else can be more helpful.

Word count does not match the effort Apr 2, 2007

my experience is that a word in Word is not a word in Ppt. Id say a word in powerpoint is 2x to 3x the effort of what a PTF (plain text file) requires.

PractiCount covers both slides and note pages Apr 3, 2007

Hi Sandra,

I've just done as Vito suggested and can confirm that PractiCount includes both slide and note page words.

Paradoxically, this program has actually caused me the odd problem in the past precisely because it does count absolutely everything, and gives a figure which is always higher than the client's word count done by looking at Properties, saving in RTF, etc.....

Saludos,
Andy

Save PPT as RTF Apr 3, 2007

When I have to work on PPt files, I always go to File/Save and choose RTF format . Then I just count words in Microsoft Word.
Good luck!

PractiCount include notes by default Apr 4, 2007

Hi Sandra,
1. yes, practicount can count the words directly in ppt files.
2. by default it includes both slides and notes. But if you don´t want the notes to be included you can disable it at "settings" in PractiCount.

I think it is better to use it than to save ppt as rtf or txt . In my experience, when you do such a transformation you loose text that is in textboxes and/or figures.
The same seems to occur when you count it using File>Properties>Statistics.

But be careful! A few weeks ago I finished a job in ppt and my client agreed to use PractiCount. Our calculations didn´t match. So I did my calculation again and for my surprise the result was different from that I had previously (and also different from my client´s!). Fortunately, it was not our first job together and both of us know that the other was in good faith , so we had no problems. I mean, it seems to me that PractiCount calculations may vary quite randomly.
Good luck!
Katia
