TM-setup, using a prepared TM (EN-US to EN-GB)

- Translation of Word files, easy
- Translation of Word file, small, making problems
- Translation of Word file, making big problems
(I do not literally mean "translate the whole file" - we shall look at the results of some operations)
- Translatiing Word file with Tageditor
- Translating Excel file with Tageditor
- Translating Powerpoint file with Tageditor
- Converting and translating DTP files (QuarkXPress, Pagemaker, Framemaker)
- Creating a termbase using an Excel file
With all these operations we will be using Trados commands and shortcuts.
I will also speak about some possible traps and show solutions for problems.
The above order must not necessarily be kept as given here. This is only intended to give you the complete overwiew about the planning.
I have prepared sample files for all the above actions. There is also a prepared TM EN-US to EN-GB, so that´s why I asked you to install Trados with English as one of your languages.

but installing will take much time, so perhaps you download (if you did not already done) and install the Trados demo from here: http://www.translationzone.com/download.asp?menuItem=12

Install it then on your laptop.

I have also planed to show, how to create a Multirerm termbase from an Excel sheet, but there is no demo of MT AFAIK... So this will only be available for registered Trados user. However, you do not need Mutiterm to understand how the process works.

For the training purposes I shall prepare some files, which you will then get on Sunday to play with. The files will have different source languages. Nevertheless, it will be enough, if we all have English as one of the languages defined in his Workbench. Other languages are not important - but please take care that you have English among your translation languages.

I like the schedule that you have come up with. Just for your info: my plane back to Franfurt leaves at 18:15. I suppose that means I have to take my leave at 16:00. I am not worried that I will miss too much, because in all likelihood by that time I shall be approaching cerebral "overload".

I think one and a half hour for basics shall be enough, that´s all and that´s the only major change. Pls take into account, that I will also need to drink something in between to keep my vocal cords oiled (and I promise not to drink this typical Scotish liquid, at least not until we are done :D)

I think your 2nd timetable for the session looks fine. I agree with Gillian that lunch at 2pm would have been too long after breakfast! If the main questions and answers are left until the end, then those who have to go will get all the training, and if anything, will only miss some of the questions and answers.

your second time schedule looks much better than the first - we'll all be climbing the walls if we have to wait until 2 pm for lunch after having breakfast at 8! Five hours concentrating with only 30 minutes break would be too strenuous to be productive IMHO.

Look at this modified time schedule:
Break times:
10:30-11:00: coffee break
1:00-2:00: lunch in the restaurant between
4:00-4:30: coffee break
We shorten the Basics to 1,5 hrs and still keep the end open :)

...these breaks are very important, as we really need time off: I don't think anybody is being able to learn, and learn and leanr for hours and hours with no breaks!!

Imagine, 7 pm are 10 hours! This is I think the absolute end of our learning capacity for one day. And this is an open end option. I do not want to make a clear cut at 5 pm, but it is possible. This would mean 6 hours training. After all I think there will be a lot of questions, and if we start to playing Q&A rounds in between, your problem will be bigger. So what I think you will possibly miss are some questions and answers after 5 pm.

19.30 from Edinburgh Airport - I think you'd originally said the workshop would finish sooner than 7, so I went ahead and booked my non-changeable flight... Shame as it means I'll have to miss part of a training I badly need!

When does your plane leave?

We have a room in the same hotel, where the Conference is beeing held.
As you can see from the time schedule, I plan an open edn, but I do not expect us to come to an end later than 7 pm.
I´m still not very sure, if we will need 2 hours for the basics, so maybe I will shorten the first part to only 1 hour. This would mean the coffe break and the lunch one hour earlier. I shall keep you posted.

Sorry for being a pain, Jerzy, but I have a plane to catch, so the less time is spent on breaks, the better!

This is not a fixed schedule, but the starting time should not be changed anymore.

We shall start at 9 am.
Lunch is included.
The session shall be divided in three blocks. Th first block with some basics on TM settings, maybe analysis if you want, dealing with most important commands, setting up projects, translating easy documents with no problems.
The second part will deal with problems with Word, then we shall translate documents with Tageditor - Word, Excel, PowerPoint. We shall also speak about the preparation of the files.
The third part is DTP - converting QuarkXPress, Pagemaker, Framemaker and translating them.
