LARGE PRE-CONFERENCE POWWOW:
GRAND CAFÉ OKTOGON
Guests are welcome.
1. How to get there:
Go to Oktogon. Walk to the left from Hotel Benczúr till the end of Benczúr utca. Turn right at Bajza utca. Cross the main avenue (Andrássy út). Take the underground for three stops, to Oktogon. You might as well walk, you get there in 10 minutes.
Once at Oktogon, find the McDonalds. If you walk from the hotel, you will have to turn right at the tram stop. If you take the underground, you come up to the surface at the world's largest Burger King joint (what a privilege...). McDonald's will be behind the tram stop on the other side of the road.
Walk past McD for another 100 meters. Grand Café Oktogon is at Teréz krt. 23, on the corner of Aradi utca, under a large Parking sign.
2. Placing orders, payment, etc.
The place is reserved for us from 18:00 onwards. This means they close for the public an hour earlier.
You can order whatever you want from the menu. The menu and the wine list is in three languages: Hu, En, Fr. A copy of these will be pinned on a message board in the hotel lobby, so you can have an idea what you want to eat before you actually get there.
You are requested to ask for the bill before you move to another table. You can move around freely, but please don't leave payment till the very end, as the staff has to handle over 10 guests.
A service charge of 10% will be automatically added to the bill, which means you don't have to give any extra tip on top of the billed amount.
A few months ago the place changed owners, and the prices are now about 25% cheaper than in January when I first reserved the restaurant for April 28th.
Food can be ordered until 11 pm, but if there's a large crowd even this late, they may extend this.
In principle the restaurant closed at midnight, but they might extend this by another hour if a large number of people are still there at midnight.
Unfortunately there are no high chairs for babies.
Please come, let's get to know each other before the conference. I'm sure it will be great fun to meet finally.

to Eponine
Hi, am arriving tomorrow and very interested by the spas on saturday, maybe we can talk tomorrow night.
See you all there.
Apr 25, 2007
Csaba Ban:
a few things
The restaurant has a seating capacity of about 130. I think now we are around that figure. This shouldn't be a problem, as not all of us will arrive at the same time, and many of us will just stand around the bar talking to each other.
A copy of the menu and the wine list will be on display in the hotel lobby from Friday morning.
If there's a large amount of people arriving at the same time, you should be patient with your orders.

Fabiana Papastefani-Pezzoni:
Not so used to over organize things
Hi all and juvera, I think you are right ad that's what I normally do when I get to places (and I do travell a lot). Besides in very few countries, when you try to (over) organize every thing you get the opposite. Besides, whenever I travel, my shcedule & plans change so often that by now I do not organize even such things such as taxi from the airport. This time I tried to do just because I thought probably many will arrive by saturday and by after noon, but will galdly follow your advice, dear juvera :))). In the evening, will be very glad to walk to the restaurant and back, I do it whenever I can and I am a good walker. So, hope a lot will join me to walk to to tha Grand Caffe the Saturday night. Thanks to all

Walking tours
ALL walking tours start at 9:30
If you open the individual walking tour sessions, you'll see a detailed itinerary. I'll also mark them on a map in the hotel lobby.
You can buy tickets for walking tours in the registration area.

Ljiljana Krstic:
WALKING TOURS
Eponine suggested sth that's a good idea for the very first meeting: walking tour
as I've seen: 1st at 10-11 am
2nd: 11-12am
CSABA: ARE THESE TWO WALKING TOURS THE SAME?
If no, we'll probably join both
If yes, it depends on various other factors which one we'll join -anyway, I'll leave a note at the reception or, better still, be around Csaba in the lobby

juvera:
Fabiana, taxi
If you are concerned to get in from the airport, it won't make much difference to pre-order a taxi or take one from the company running it at the airport.
If you were thinking of going to the Cafe Oktogon by taxi, you just ask the hotel concierge to call one for you. It may take 5-10 minutes to arrive, but no more. As the distance is about 2 km, they are not going to be able to fleece you.

Taxi
Csaba, just wanted to let you know that is was pratically impossible to book online a cab at the City Taxi. After filling all the fields, the site requires a mandatory Hungarian contact/telephone number. Since I do not have a HUngarian telephone number I gave the one I found on the web site of the Hotel Benczur (by the way, can we include here or at the conference page at Venue tab the address of the hotel, as I didn't see it and I had to google it) but it kept telling me that it was not the correct telephone number. Will try to call them from here to book, as I imagine many cabs will be busy by that time of the 28th of April. Thanks :))

Ljiljana - problem with your email so just to suggest that you leave me a note at hotel reception (Benczur)with your mobile number - otherwise if you arrive in time join us on the sightseeing walking tour on Sat am and we'll continue from there with spa, shopping etc. See you soon : )

spa
Hello, prozians and Eponine
2 of us from Serbia arrive on Saturday, early -shall have time for girls' usual fun: sightseeing and shopping, and are also interested in visiting one of those spas in Budapest -so will gladly join you, eponine-you may mail me directly to liki@yubc.net so we arrange meeting in advance -and tell us more about spas
greetings from sunny Belgrade Ljiljana & Ema

juvera:
Oktogon: it's a no brainer
1. I am sure, you will find town centre maps in all the hotels.
2. From the Benczur, you head West, to Andrassy ut, turn left there, walk along Andrassy in southerly direction to Oktogon square. As you get nearer you will see yellow trams going accross. That's your clue to Oktogon square.
Nice walk, no rain, I promise.
I you are VERY late, ask the hotel for a taxi, 4-5 minutes ride.
Apr 24, 2007
Evi Prokopi:
Greek power! :Pp
The girls from Greece and I arrive at 16.40, and this will make it a bit hard to catch up with you at the hotel, but I hope we will manage to arrive at Oktogon, on time! :))
Apr 24, 2007
Rebekka Groß:
Saturday
We'll join in, too. See you all on Saturday.
Apr 24, 2007
Fabiana Papastefani-Pezzoni:
Deal!
Let's all meet then at 17:30 and leve after 5-10 min. Hope will not rain. See you all there :))

Marguerite Knox:
hotel lobby meeting Saturday
great idea Fabiana to meet up in lobby on Sat. evening. I'll be spending the day sightseeing, shopping and trying out the spa - if any girls would like to join me let me know : ) See you all soon travel safely, all the best from Ireland

Csaba Ban:
answers
For airport arrival info, please see the Venue tab.
It's an easy 15-minute walk from the hotel to Oktogon, so if there's a larger group, I'd recommend walking and skipping the metro.
Metro wagons on this line are quite small, so they're not suitable for very large groups.
Also, Andrássy út is a world heritage site (perhaps a bit overrated though), so you can really enjoy walking.
Apr 24, 2007
Fabiana Papastefani-Pezzoni:
Meet @....
My plane lands at 15:30 so Iguess will get to the hotel not earlier then 16:40 (by the way, how is traffic in Budapest? Is the airport very far from the town/hotel?). Csaba, do I understand you correct that we could either walk to the Grand Caffe, which would take 15 minutes, or walking to the Metro station and then the short trip by Metro and then 100 meters from the Oktagon Metro Station, which all together would take 15 minutes? Could you please very roughly tell us in both cases how long do we need to count so that we fix an approximate time to meet at the loby of the Hotel Benczùr and then leave from there? Is it reasonable to say: Let's meet at 17:25 at the loby and leave 17:35? Thanks Csaba and colleagues for tidying up this bit as well. Cheers from still chilly Kiev, Ukraine :))
Apr 24, 2007
Csaba Ban:
An idea
I think it's a good idea to form a group from the hotel. Please take into account that it takes about 15 minutes of walking to get there. The place is booked for us from 6 pm.
Many of you might be doing some sightseeing during the day. In this case it does not make much to come back to the hotel just to join this group.
Grand Café Oktogon is very centrally located, so you can easily get there after sightseeing.
If you come from downtown, you can easily walk to Oktogon, or take the underground (line 1) from Vörösmarty tér or Deák tér to Oktogon.
If you come from the Buda Castle area (e.g. you finished the walking tour there and you stayed there for the rest of the afternoon), you have two options:
1. From Dísz tér in the Castle, take bus 16 to Deák tér and walk from there or take the underground to Oktogon.
2. You can easily walk downhill to Moszkva tér, the most important transport hub in Buda. From here, you should take tram 4 or 6 to Oktogon.

Group from the Conference hotel
Hi folks, I was wondering if we can make a group of some of us that (might be) staying at the Conference hotel to leave together and get to the Grand Café Oktogon? Probably other folks not so far from the Conference hotel can also joing this group...Can we pin this info at the Reception area? Thanks a lot and see you soon, Fabiana
Apr 20, 2007
Helena Marchão Pires:
info
Hi Csaba,
If possible can you provide me with instructions how to get to the places directly from the Corinthia? It will be easier for me as I'm not staying in the Conference hotel and it might get confusing...
Thanks a lot.
Apr 20, 2007
Csaba Ban:
Oktogon, etc.
Oktogon is a very central location in Budapest. It's a major crossroads at the intersection of the main boulevard and Andrássy út. Its name comes from its octagonal shape.
This is also a favourite meeting point, given the high concentration of cafés, bars and restaurants in this area.
Grand Café Oktogon is 100 meters from here, Birdland is at the far end of Liszt Ferenc tér (3 minutes from Oktogon). Platán is justaround the corner from the hotel, so it's next to the City Park.
Please read the relevant powwow pages or conference session pages for very detailed instructions on how to get to these places.
In the hotel lobby there will be a large city map pinned on a message board where all of these places will be clearly indicated.

Veronika Wagner:
restaurants again
Hiya Helena. As I find, Csaba was really considerate when choosing restaurants. Actually, he is doing a professional job as an organiser (Thanks, Csaba.) All three places are quite close to the hotel. As Annette has remarked, Birdland and Grand Café Oktogon are an easy walk from Oktogon tube station, Platán is also just a few stops from there.
Apr 20, 2007
Helena1962:
@ Anette and Veronika
Hello!
Thank you for your both comments!
@ Veronika: If I understood it right, on 27th: "Birdland Café", on 28th: "Oktogon", on
29th: Danuve Cruise and on 30th: at "Platan"
@Anette: Yes you are right. I will check the name of the subaway-station.
Thank you at both of you!
See you there,
Helena

Hola Helena!
Oktogon is just the name of the tube station you have to get out. From there you walk to the restaurants.
Hasta pronto!

Hi, Helena. 30th is Platan, isn't it? Looking forward to see you. Cheers.

Hello!
Just a simple question:
Do we meet TWICE at "Oktogon"? (on Friday the 27th. AND on Monday, the 30th.)????
Thank you!
See you there,

Grand Café Oktogon confirmed
I just called this restaurant just to reconfirm our powwow, and to my horror, the manager with whom I settled down all the details some months ago no longer works for this place and when he left, he did not even mention this booking to the management.
Luckily enough, the place was still un-booked, so we will have it for ourselves for sure, with the same conditions.
We will have a shorter version of the menu and everybody will be able to choose from this short menu on the spot. The place is one large hall, which makes it ideal for a large powwow - you can easily walk around and sit down to other tables, etc.
The place is booked for us from 6 pm till midnight, but you may also go there earlier if you like.
Food is normally served until 11 pm, but if there's a large demand, they can extend this to midnight.

room sharing
I asked this question in accomodation forum but no one seems to use it anymore, so I 'll just repeat it here: is any of the ladies interested in sharing a room in the venu hotel for 2 nights?

Timings
I land at 19:10 but have no idea how long it will take to check in and reach the Grand Café Oktogon or what time dinner is served in Hungary. Any pointers would be welcome.
