About the venue... May 18, 2004

... I was thinking of a nice place called "the Devonshire Cat".

http://www.devonshirecat.co.uk

It is a modern pub/bar (located in the city center) with a large selection of drinks and a nice menu (good quality food).

Also, it is quite large so it would be good for our group.

Any other suggestions welcome of course.

Get your ID verified at the Sheffield powwow May 24, 2004

Hi everybody!

I have been given the authority to VID ProZ.com members. This mean that I will be able to approve your
name, causing the VID symbol to appear on your profile.

It won't cost you anything - all you have to do is bear in mind the following requirements.

Quoting ProZ:

* You must show me a photo ID

* Prior to the powwow you must show your real name on your profile page (otherwise there is no way I can verify you online).
* Vidding another member verifies only their identity --I will be verifying that a real person with this name exists.

So don't hesitate!

Hi Alexa May 28, 2004

It is nice to know that there are powwow in other cities than in London. the venue seems nice. What time would it be starting and what have you planned on the agenda?
keep me posted. if you need anything, let me know.
I'll probably send you and email in a few weeks to know more about the progress.

Kind regards,

Hacène

Bonjour Hacène!

I don't really have an agenda as such in mind. I was actually thinking the powwow would mainly be a good way to make new contacts and develop our network in the translation business, exchange ideas, etc. and also, quite simply, a friendly way to put faces to names and get away from working alone.

The other thing I had in mind was helping proz members to get their IDs verified if needed as I have the authority to do so (see my previous post).

Of course any suggestions/ideas for the powwow are welcome. We still have a couple of months to think about it.

Also, thanks to all the people who have offered to take picturesicon_smile.gif
After the event I will set up a page about it on my IDFP website (www.idfp.co.uk) so it will definitely be useful to have those pix.

Starting time? How about from 1pm or 2pm? Again, just an idea. My associate (Alex Storer) and I will probably be there from lunchtime, have lunch there and wait for people to arrive.
This will be informal so you can show up at whatever time is convenient for you. We'll be there all afternoon anyway.

I thought meeting in the afternoon would be more convenient for most people as it will allow time to get to Sheffield.

Don't hesitate to email me if you don't find enough information on this forum.

Cheers

Regarding your question:
I guess the main thing about having your ID verified is to have more credibility in the eyes of potential clients.

We translators are always worried about whether any new client will pay us or not, but at the same time translation agencies also want to know who they are dealing with (when they contact new translators) and they want to make sure to have their documents delivered on time and translated properly.

So basically, by having your ID verified you're proving potential clients that you are real! Of course it doesn't guarantee the quality of your work - for that it's good to have your credentials verified... but this is another story!icon_wink.gif

Anyway... welcome on board!

Also, by logging on http://www.proz.com/powwow/536 I have noticed there is an option to indicate whether you will attend / will no longer be able to attend / will maybe attend : I would be grateful if you could edit your attendance so that I have a better idea of how many people will be there in order to make a reservation at the Devonshire Cat.
Thanks a lot.

re: about parking Sep 6, 2004

Hello Graciela

The Devonshire Cat pub (www.devonshirecat.co.uk) is easy to find and access.

It is also easy to park near the pub - actually I found this area to be the cheapest in town (something like 60p per hour) and with the longest parking limit (10 hours). There are always lots
of spaces available even though it is just a 5-minute walk to the actual city centre.

It is also walking distance from the train station - about 15 minutes I would say.

FYI here is the multimap link to locate the pub:
http://www.multimap.com/map/browse.cgi?local=h&scale=5000&gride=434932&gridn=386923

Anyway, I'll make sure to post all these details in my upcoming update. I will create a special page on my www.idfp.co.uk website.

Cheers
