Specialization / Background

Independent Translator - Patent Translation Specialist

American Translator Association
Certified Translator for French into English

US Patent and Trademark Office
Registered Patent Agent

I am an experienced telecom professional with a doctorate in astronomy.  I am also an ATA Certified Translator for French into English and a USPTO Registered Patent Agent.  I am a US native and I have been a full time free-lance translator since 2002.

I translate: science (physics, astronomy, organic and pharmaceutical chemistry, and meteorology); math; telecommunications; computer software, hardware, operations and networking; medical instruments; and electronics.

I am also available for preparing and prosecuting US patent applications, especially those based on prior French or EPO applications in French.

I am a member of the American Translators Association (ATA) and the New England Translators Association (NETA).  I am active in NETA; I am a former member of the Board of Directors and the organizing committee for the annual conference. . In the ATA, I am a Grader in the Certification Program and candidate for Administrator of the ATA French Language Division. I have written three articles for the ATA Chronicle: How to Get and Use Your Own Internet Domain Name, April 2004; Electronic Organization for Translators, March 2007; and Using Patents to Find the Terminology You Need, May 2009. I presented my talk, Anatomy of a Patent, at the ATA 50th Annual Conference in New York City. I am scheduled to give another presentation at the ATA 51st Annual Conference in Denver.

My doctorate in Astronomy from Harvard University and my status as a full-member of the American Astronomical Society testify to my expert knowledge and experience in astronomy, physics and math.  My registration by the USPTO as a Patent Agent establishes my qualification to represent clients before the Patent Office to obtain patent protection.

I previously worked as a telecommunications technology, architecture and planning expert for the Chief Technology Officer of an optical networking service provider.  Before that I worked for Bell Labs, Lucent Technologies (formerly part of AT&T) for 13 years planning and designing equipment for SONET and ATM telecommunications networks, and software for network and element management systems. This included customer contact (in French) with France Telecom and Belgacom. I also worked for a few years in an academic organic chemistry laboratory.

I focus on translating the following materials:

  • patents (over 165 translated)
  • patent related documents involving prosecution, opposition and infringement (filings, pleadings, notices, office actions, opinions of the search authority, court and administrative decisions, and expert witness reports)
  • scientific journal articles (over 21 translated)
  • clinical trial protocols, informed consent forms, care report forms, correspondence
  • pharmaceutical manufacturing procedures and records
  • research and laboratory notebooks
  • bid requirements or requests for proposals/bid responses or proposals
  • feature and product specifications

I am also available for preparing and prosecuting US patent applications, especially those based on prior French or EPO applications in French.

Please see my website, Bien Fait Translations, for further information and samples of my work.
