Living and working in Slovakia I edited scientific abstracts (zoology, agriculture, biology, math) and translated for the Slovak Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Education, Agriculture, the Slovak Environmental Agency, Slovalco (aluminium industry), and the Slovak Sugar Association. Also wrote art history texts for calendars for a Slovak publisher (Monet, Renoir, Van Gogh, Old Masters). Below are some sample translations I have done from German, Slovak, Spanish and French into English. GERMAN to English (example of Allgemeine Geschäftsbedingungen ("AGB"). "Schlägt die Nacherfüllung fehl, kann der Kunde grundsätzlich nach seiner Wahl Herabsetzung der Vergütung (Minderung) oder Rückgängigmachung des Vertrags (Rücktritt) verlangen. SPANISH to English Situación geográfica El macizo de Rila son las montañas más majestuosas de todo Bulgaria. Rila son unas montañas en el sudoeste de Bulgaria y las más altas montañas de Bulgaria y de los Balcanes. El macizo es además el sexto más alto de Europa (cada uno representado únicamente por el pico más alto), detrás del Cáucaso, los Alpes, Sierra Nevada, los Pirineos y el Monte Etna. El nombre de Rila, se alega que, es de origen tracio y significa "montaña bien regada", a causa de la abundancia en Rila de lagos glaciares (unos 200) y calurosas primaveras. Algunos de los más largos y rápidos ríos de los Balcanes nacen en Rila, incluyendo los ríos Maritsa, Iskar y Mesta. Geography The mountains of the Rila massif are the most majestic in Bulgaria. The Rila mountains, in southwestern Bulgaria, are the highest mountains in Bulgaria and indeed the Balkans. The massif is also the sixth highest in Europe (each European massif is represented by the highest peak) after the Caucasus, the Alps, the Sierra Nevada, the Pyrenees and Mount Etna. The name of Rila, which is claimed to be of Thracian origin, means "well-watered mountain", owing to the abundance of glacial lakes (some 200) and hot springs in the massif. Some of the longest and swiftest rivers and rapids of the Balkans begin there, including the Maritsa, Iskar and Mesta rivers. The highest peak, at 2925 meters, is Musala, the highest peak in the Balkans and the same height as Mount Olympus. Two hours from Sofia, Bulgaria’s capital city, it is the main ski area near the capital and has several mountain lodges along its flanks. Geology Rila is a massif peak with a rounded summit, part of the oldest terrain in the Balkans, the Macedonian-Thracian massif. It is composed of granite and gneiss rock formed during the Paleozoic (250,000,000 years ago). The alpine relief of Rila was formed later, between 10-12,000 years ago, after the Würm (or Wisconsin) glaciation, where the snow line was at 2100 meters above sea level; above this line glaciers dramatically altered the existing terrain, creating deep cirques, steep pyramids, rounded peaks, rocky peaks, numerous valleys, moraines and other typical glacial formations. Il n'y a aucun doute que le compostage des restes de table, des feuilles et des résidus du jardinage réduit de diverses manières l'impact des activités humaines sur l'environnement. Non seulement le compostage permet d'économiser les ressources affectées aux lieux d'enfouissement, mais il produit une précieuse matière qui sert à amender le sol et réduit le besoin de pesticides et d'engrais chimiques et leur utilisation. Les « déchets » que nous produisons à la maison peuvent aider à faire pousser des plantes et des légumes sans avoir à quitter la cour ou le balcon. Souvent surnommé « or noir », le compost est un produit semblable à la terre et dérivé d'un processus biologique naturel qui convertit les matières organiques, comme les restes de table, les feuilles et les résidus du jardinage en excellent conditionneur de sol riche en éléments nutritifs. La valeur du compostage Le compostage de matières organiques comporte de multiples bénéfices. Without a doubt, composting leftovers, leaves and gardening waste reduces our impact on the environment. Composting not only allows resources to be saved a trip to the dump, it produces a valuable material that enriches soil and reduces the need for pesticides and chemical fertilizers. The "waste" that we produce at home can help plants and vegetables sprout and grow, without having to leave the yard or the balcony. Often nicknamed "black gold", compost is a product much like soil itself and is derived from a natural biological process that converts organic matter such as table scraps, leaves and gardening residues into an excellent soil conditioner rich in nutrients. The Value of Composting Composting brings many benefits. About 40 to 50 percent of domestic wastes is made up of organic matter that could be separated from garbage fated for the dump. Composting considerably reduces the need for converting land into dumps, once people separate and sort their household waste, sending leaves and garden waste to a household compost pile or to a larger centralized site. What’s more, composting results in a product that eliminates the need for pesticides and chemical fertilizers. Rich in organic matter, mature compost can improve the texture and the fertility of the soil and can be used for many purposes: for gardening, landscaping, or just to feed the plants on the windowsill.
