As they part that day, Cranmer glances up from the table and says, ‘Of course, I don’t officially know.’
‘About the child?’
‘About the marriage. As I am to be judge in the matter of the
king’s old marriage, it would not be proper for me to hear that
his new one has already taken place.’
‘Right,’ he says. ‘What Rowland gets up to in the early hours
of the morning is a matter for himself alone.’ He leaves Cranmer
with head bowed over the remains of their meal, as if studying to
reassemble the fish.
As our severance from the Vatican is not yet complete, we
cannot have a new archbishop unless the Pope appoints him.
Delegates in Rome are empowered to say anything, promise
anything, pro tem, to get Clement to agree. The king says, aghast,
‘Do you know how much the papal bulls cost, for Canterbury?
And that I shall have to pay for them? And you know how much
it costs to install him?’ He adds, ‘It must be done properly, of
course, nothing omitted, nothing scanted.’
‘It will be the last money Your Majesty sends to Rome, if it
rests with me.’
‘And do you know,’ the king says, as if he has discovered
something astonishing, ‘that Cranmer has not a penny of his
own? He can contribute nothing.’
Henry may err, but he needs to be forgiven. I therefore
believe, and will continue to believe, that he will turn out of
this path of error, in order to be at peace with himself. And peace
is what we all wish for, I am sure.’
‘What a placid end you make, madam. “Peace is what we all
wish for.” Like an abbess. You are quite sure by the way that you
would not think of becoming an abbess?’
A smile. Quite a broad smile. ‘I shall be sorry if I don’t see you
again. You are so much quicker in conversation than the dukes.’
‘The dukes will be back.’
‘I am braced. Is there news of my lady Suffolk?’
‘The king says she is dying. Brandon has no heart for
anything.’
‘I can well believe it,’ she murmurs. ‘Her income as dowager
queen of France dies with her, and that is the greater part of his
revenue. Still, no doubt you will arrange him a loan, at some iniquitous rate of interest.’ She looks up. ‘My daughter will be curious to know I have seen you. She believes you were kind to her.’
He only remembers giving her a stool to sit on. Her life must
be bleak, if she remembers that.
‘Properly, she should have remained standing, awaiting a sign
from me.’
Her own pain-racked little daughter. She may smile, but she
doesn’t yield an inch. Julius Caesar would have had more

Wanneer ze die dag uit elkaar gaan, kijkt Cranmer op van de tafel en zegt: ‘Vanzelfsprekend weet ik officieel nog niets.’
‘Van het kind?’
‘Van het huwelijk. Aangezien ik als rechter ben aangewezen in de kwestie van het oude huwelijk van de koning, zou het niet correct zijn als ik ervan op de hoogte was dat zijn nieuwe al is voltrokken.’
‘Juist,’ zegt hij. ‘Wat Rowland in de vroege uren van de dag uitspookt, gaat alleen hem aan.’ Hij verlaat Cranmer, die over de restanten van hun maaltijd gebogen zit alsof hij reassemblage van de vis overweegt.
Daar onze scheiding van het Vaticaan nog niet voltrokken is, kunnen we geen nieuwe aartsbisschop installeren tenzij de paus hem heeft aangewezen. Afgezanten in Rome worden gemachtigd om álles te zeggen, álles te beloven, pro tempore, om Clemens zover te krijgen dat hij akkoord gaat. De koning zegt ontzet: ‘Weet je wel hoeveel de pauselijke bullen voor Canterbury kosten? En dat ik ze zal moeten betalen? En weet je wel hoeveel het kost om hem te installeren?’ Hij voegt eraan toe: ‘Dat moet natuurlijk naar behoren worden gedaan, zonder omissies, zonder ergens op af te dingen.’
‘Het zal het laatste geld zijn dat Uwe Hoogheid naar Rome stuurt, als het aan mij ligt.’
‘En weet je wel,’ zegt de koning, alsof hij een verbazingwekkende ontdekking heeft gedaan, ‘dat Cranmer geen penny van zichzelf heeft? Hij kan niets bijdragen.’
Henry mag dan dwalen, maar hij heeft vergiffenis nodig. Daarom geloof ik, en blijf ik geloven, dat hij zal terugkeren van zijn dwaalpad om in vrede met zichzelf te leven. Vrede willen we tenslotte allemaal.’
‘Wat verwoordt u uw besluit sereen, mevrouw. “Vrede willen we tenslotte allemaal.” Als een abdis. U weet heel zeker, trouwens, dat u er niet over zou piekeren om abdis te worden?’
Een glimlach. Een brede zelfs. ‘Het zal me spijten als ik u niet weerzie. U bent zoveel scherpzinniger als gesprekspartner dan de hertogen.’
‘De hertogen zullen terugkomen.’
‘Ik zet me vast schrap. Is er nieuws over lady Suffolk?’
‘Volgens de koning is ze stervende. Brandon loopt met zijn ziel onder de arm.’
‘Dat geloof ik graag,’ mompelt ze. ‘Haar inkomen als douairière-koningin van Frankrijk sterft met haar, en dat maakt het leeuwendeel van zijn inkomsten uit. Maar goed, ongetwijfeld bedisselt u een lening voor hem tegen een of ander onbillijk rentetarief.’ Ze kijkt op. ‘Het zal mijn dochter interesseren dat ik u heb gesproken. Ze vindt dat u aardig voor haar bent geweest.’
Hij herinnert zich alleen dat hij haar een kruk heeft gegeven om op te zitten. Haar leven moet wel naargeestig zijn, als dat haar is bijgebleven.
‘Strikt genomen had ze moeten blijven staan en op een teken van mij moeten wachten.’
Haar eigen door pijn gekwelde meisje. Hoe breed haar glimlach ook is, ze geeft geen centimeter toe. Julius Caesar zou meer mededogen hebben gehad. Hannibal.
