Source text - English The continued existence of Oman's unique oasis settlements depends on the productivity of their lush crop fields and orchards. In the course of the country's modernisation process, the more remote of these settlements are rapidly abandoned, if poor infrastructural conditions and limited opportunities for income generation prevail. Given its potential to reconcile the cultural values and needs of oasis residents with the interests of national and international tourists, ecotourism may offer opportunities to slow down the widespread decline of Oman's traditional oasis agriculture and transform it into an asset, which offers additional income opportunities. This approach to tourism is in contrast to the mainstream of the country's current development policy, which increasingly favours beach hotels and easy access to remote areas through day trips on paved, well-illuminated roads. Using the example of a village in the northern Jabal al Akhdar range, this study discusses how ecotourism may become an avenue to preserve Omani mountain oases as culturally unique, agro-pastoral livelihood systems, which, for millennia, have effectively coped with a fragile, hyper-arid environment.
Translation - Italian La presenza stabile di insediamenti nelle straordinarie oasi dell’Oman dipende dalla produttività delle piantaggioni e dei frutteti rigogliosi. Durante il processo di modernizzazione del Paese, gli insediamenti più antichi sono stati rapidamente abbandonati, con il prevalere della fatiscente condizione delle infrastrutture e delle limitate opportunità per la generazione di reddito. Considerando il potenziale avvicinamento dei valori culturali e delle esigenze dei residenti delle oasi con gli interessi dei turisti nazionali e internazionali, l’ecoturismo può fornire l’opportunità per frenare il diffuso declino dell’agricoltura tradizionale delle oasi e trasformarla in una risorsa che offre ulteriori opportunità di reddito. Questa propensione al turismo è in contrasto con la prevalente politica di sviluppo del Paese, che incoraggia sempre di più la costruzione di alberghi vicino la spiaggia e l’accesso nelle zone più remote attraverso gite di un giorno su strade asfaltate e ben illuminate. Riportando come esempio un villaggio a nord della catena montuosa del Jabal al Akhdar, questo studio mostra come l’ecoturismo può rappresentare la strada per preservare le Oasi delle montagne dell’Oman quali sistemi unici dal punto di vista culturale e basati sull’attività agro-pastorale come fonte di sostentamento, che, per millenni, hanno efficacemente fronteggiato un ambiente fragile e iper arido.
