Bill Reinert, an innovator of Toyota's gasoline-saving Prius, says carmakers aren't moving fast enough to cope with global warming and $100-a-barrel crude. Hybrids, plug-ins and electric-only vehicles must take center stage to help the planet avoid environmental and economic disaster.
Bill Reinert, who helped design Toyota Motor Corp.'s Prius hybrid, hovers in a helicopter 1,000 feet over Fort McMurray, Alberta. On this clear November morning, he's craning for a look at one of the world's largest petroleum reserves where there's not an oil well in sight. Instead, in a 2-mile-wide pit below, trucks head to refineries with loads of sand weighing more than Boeing 747s. Yellow flames shoot skyward as 900-degree-Fahrenheit (482-degree- Celsius) heat liquefies any embedded petroleum. Floating scarecrows and propane-powered cannons do their best to chase migrating birds from lethal wastewater ponds. Eventually, nuclear reactors may surround the crater 270 miles (435 kilometers) northeast of Edmonton, Alberta, delivering the power required to wring oil from sand.
"This is what the end of the age of oil means," says Reinert, 60, who plans the vehicles Toyota will make in a quarter century as national manager for advanced technology at the U.S. sales unit in Torrance, California. "The car-based culture, the business-as- usual of building cars and trucks, is going to change dramatically."
Since Henry Ford introduced the moving assembly line in 1913, the world's automakers have relied on a single source of power--the gasoline-dependent internal combustion engine. Today, the twin threats of $100-a-barrel oil and global warming are convulsing an industry addicted to cheap, abundant petroleum. Auto companies, already hurt in 2007 by the lowest U.S. demand in a decade, are struggling to perfect cars that run on ethanol, diesel, natural gas, hydrogen and household electricity. They're under the gun from California and more than a dozen other states to cut carbon exhaust by 2020 with vehicles that must get 44 miles per gallon (19 kilometers per liter) of gasoline, about double today's average. On Dec. 19, President George W. Bush signed a law that mandates fuel-efficiency of 35 mpg nationwide by that year.

صرّح بيل رينرت مخترع سيارة تويوتا بريوس الموفرة للبنزين بأن صنّاع السيارات لا يتعاملون بالسرعة الكافية مع مشكلة الاحتباس الحراري وارتفاع أسعار النفط التي بلغت 100 دولار للبرميل الخام. لابد أن تحتل السيارات الهجينة , والتي تعمل بالشحن, وكذلك تلك التي تعمل بالكهرباء فقط بؤرة الاهتمام لمساعدة الكوكب علي تجنب وقوع كوارث بيئية و أزمات اقتصادية.
صرح بيل رينرت ـ الذي ساعد في تصميم سيارة بريوس المهجنة لشركة تويوتا موتور ، ـ أثناء تحليقه بمروحية علي ارتفاع مائة قدم فوق فورت ماكمورى بولاية ألبرتا . في صباح هذا اليوم الصحو من شهر نوفمبر، نجده حلق بالطائرة ليُلقي نظرة على أحد أكبر مخزون احتياطي للبترول في العالم حيث لا أثر لأي بئر بترول علي مرمي البصر, ولكن توجد هوة باتساع ميلين تمر منها الشاحنات متجه إلي معامل التكرير مُحمّلة بأطنان من الرمال تعادل في وزنها أكثر من وزن طائرة بوينج 747 س ، ينطلق اللهب الأصفر نحو السماء عندما تقوم درجة الحرارة التي تبلغ 900 درجة فهرنهايت (بما يعادل 482 درجة مئوية بتسييل البترول المطمور.
تطارد الفزاعات الناتجة عن ألسنة اللهب الطائرة وطلقات غاز البروبان الطيور المهاجرة بعيدا عن البرك المليئة بالنفايات السامة .
وفي النهاية تُحاط فوهة الهوة التي تبعُد 270 ميل اى 435 كليومتر شمال شرق أدمونتون بولاية ألبرتا بمفاعل نووي، للتزود بالطاقة اللازمة لاستخلاص البترول من الرمال . يقول رينرت :"هذا ما يعنيه نهاية عصر النفط " ، وأضاف رينرت الذي صمم سيارة تويوتا التي ستقود التكنولوجيا المتقدمة في الولايات المتحدة لمدة ربع قرن ، في منفذ البيع في تورانس بولاية كاليفورنيا ، قائلاً" سوف تتغير ثقافة السيارات ، وكذلك صناعة الشاحنات و السيارات المعتادة بشكل جذري "
منذ إنشاء هنرى فورد لخط التجميع المتحرك في عام 1913 ، اعتمد عالم صُنّاع السيارات على مصدر وحيد للطاقة وهو البنزين لتشغيل محرك الاحتراق الداخلي ، نواجه في الوقت الحالي اثنان من المهددات: ارتفاع سعر برميل البترول الذي بلغ 100 دولار للبرميل و وظاهرة الاحتباس الحراري , وهما يهزان عرش الصناعة التي أدمنت علي استخدام البترول الوفير زهيد الثمن. ،
إن شركات السيارات في الولايات المتحدة التي تضررت من جراء ضعف الطلب في عام 2007 تسعى بالفعل إلي إتقان تصنيع سيارات تستخدم الإيثانول والديزل و الغاز الطبيعي و الهيدروجين و الكهرباء .
تعاني تلك الشركات الأمرين خاصة من سكان ولاية كاليفورنيا على وجه الخصوص بالإضافة إلي عدة ولايات أخرى لتقليل عوادم أكسيد الكربون بحلول عام 2020 حيث يجب على السيارة أن تستهلك لتر بنزين لكل 19 كيلومتر فقط ( 44 جالون لكل ميل ) ، أي ضعف متوسط المعدل الحالي .
وقع الرئيس جورج دبليو بوش في التاسع عشر من ديسمبر على قانون يقضي بتوفير استهلاك الوقود إلى 35 ميل لكل جالون علي مستوي الولايات المتحدة بنهاية هذا العام.

COVENANT NOT TO SUE
In consideration of the foregoing Confidential Release of All Claims entered into between Jane Doe and Company X, as defined in the Confidential Release of All Claims, the husband of Jane Doe, John Doe, warrants and covenants for now and in perpetuity not to sue Company X, its predecessors, successors, partners, joint venturers, affiliates, parent companies, related corporations or companies, subsidiaries, divisions, assigns, Board members, officers, employees, agents, servants, specifically including, without limitation, George Washington and Benjamin Franklin, attorneys, suppliers and vendors, specifically including Staffing Agency X and Abraham Lincoln (“Company X”), for any and all debts, claims, actions, conduct or omissions regarding him and his application for employment at Company X, or any other matters and including, but not limited to, claims concerning his wife which were made or might have been made, or by reason of any matter, cause or thing whatsoever arising under any state or federal law or regulation relating to his wife’s former employment relationship with Company X, the circumstances of her resignation, or any alleged relationship between Jane Doe and Samuel Adams or any debt of Samuel Adams to Jane Doe or to John Doe as of the date of this Covenant Not To Sue; and,
HEREBY agrees that he will not disclose any matters pertaining to this Covenant Not To Sue, the claims of Jane Doe, or the matters contained in the Confidential Release of All Claims for Jane Doe, and should it be proven that he has done so, Company X, as defined above, shall be entitled to recover from him actual damages, if any, plus any attorneys’ fees and costs associated with collection of these damages.
