Africa’s second-largest economy has home-grown problems, too
STAND on the beachfront of Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial capital, and a puzzling scene emerges from the tropical haze: a stately line of container ships, each at anchor, queuing to enter the harbour. Despite the global slump, congestion is not letting up, says the director of the company that runs the privatised port. The number of inbound containers has doubled in the past three years; so far in 2009 there has been no decline. Such is the crush in Lagos that getting cargo from ship to port to lorry still takes an average of six weeks.
Such blockages are nothing to celebrate. But they indicate how 140m-odd Nigerians, despite being battered by a sharp fall in oil revenues and by an equally painful 20% devaluation of their currency, the naira, remain hungry for imports. If you are reading this after checking out my CV one thing will immediately strike you as peculiar: throughout my working career I have never really translated as a way of making a living. What my working career has provided me with though is a wealth of knowledge regarding the environment within which I have been moving for over twenty years.
My decision to try my hand at professionally translating texts has more to do with a life long passion for languages in general - I am continuously striving to memorise words and expressions even from the most improbable tongues I have come across in my roamings - than with a real need to make a living as I currently carry on working full time for the ING Renault F1 Racing Team.
Having been a fixture in the Renault F1 travelling personnel group for the last fourteen years adding to the seven I had already totalled before I moved to the UK from Italy I feel I can rightfully claim having collected a vast experience in dealing with diverse cultures and people from around the globe and I have more than proven my ability to communicate in any of the five languages I fluently speak and write. In more than a few instances I have been acting as an impromptu interpreter for team members, sponsor representatives, journalists and the like, increasingly frequently on behalf of my employer.

Keywords: Twenty plus years of working with racing cars and in the automobile industry in general make for this field being my best speciality area.
