Over the past four years, I have developed a specialized knowledge of patents and patent law. I come from a family of engineers and have always had access to information about mechanical systems; however, I chose to study languages in college as I also have an excellent linguistic ability. Due to my background, I have an excellent ability to understand and visualize scientific and mechanical systems, which enables me to provide highly accurate translations in a variety of techical fields.
I trained as a German medievalist; therefore, I am extremely knowledgeable about the history, culture, and religions of medieval Germany and Europe. I read and translate various dialects of medieval German and Latin. In addition, I specialize in reading older, hand-written documents, such as letters, wills, genealogical documents and archive materials.
I also studied modern Germany, the German speaking countries, their literature and cultures.
Through my graduate training, I gained an excellent background in research methods and source evaluation, which allows me to identify the documents and terminology most helpful in creating accurate and fluent translations in technical, as well as literary fields.
Prior to becoming a full-time translator, I translated on an ad hoc basis for five years. In addition, my dissertation and my other academic publications have required large amounts of translation to present the material to an English speaking audience.
Due to the vagaries of the academic job market and familiy decisions, I have chosen to pursue translation as a career.
