Source text - Spanish Estamos acostumbrados a hablar de los cambios de una sociedad como si fueran grandes noticias que requieren nombres propios. Las mayúsculas se refieren a políticos, guerras, regímenes, gobiernos, empresas, personajes. Se trata de una historia de protagonistas, heredera de una vieja tradición de adoctrinamiento de príncipes en la que los anales que se escribían eran para ensalzar la dinastía del regio educando. Hoy no se puede mantener una interpretación tan ingenua y personalista de la vida social. Esta es sobre todo vida y por tanto se refiere a los individuos. Las transformaciones de una sociedad son las que afectan a los sucesos cotidianos de sus habitantes. Ese es el enfoque que se quiere dar a este apartado, que trata de las transformaciones de la sociedad española a lo largo del ultimo siglo. Nos vamos a centrar más bien en la doble fotografía de los momentos finales de cada centuria. En uno y otro tiempo vamos a enfocar nuestras observaciones sobre Andalucía, sobre las regiones meridionales de la Península. Este es un punto de vista que no suele ser usual en las crónicas españolas. En 1900 apenas hay diferencias entre el conjunto andaluz y el español. Incluso en la población femenina, la situación andaluza de 1900 era más “moderna” que la del conjunto español. La mujer andaluza trabajaba entonces muy poco fuera del hogar. Sin embargo, había algunos núcleos de empleos femeninos con mucha tradición en la fabricación de tabaco (las cigarreras) y en la industria alimentaria. No se puede hablar de Andalucía como el equivalente de una nación subdesarrollada, sino prematuramente desarrollada y por ello mal desarrollada. Hace un siglo Andalucía contaba ya con ciertos elementos que se consideran necesarios para el desarrollo. Había una tradición comercial y burguesa. Existían capitales, en los dos sentidos de ciudades centrales y de ahorro concentrado. Contaba con una tradición de minorías ilustradas, de las clases profesionales, de núcleos que irradiaban cultura. Por tener, Andalucía tenía incluso una selecta colonia de extranjeros, dedicada a la exportación. A todo esto hay que añadir materias primas en abundancia (aunque sin carbón) y un clima generoso con algunas producciones agrarias. Todo eso se puede predicar de Andalucía y de manera más diluida del conjunto español. Pues bien, eso, que parecía una palanca para el desarrollo, fue paradójicamente un obstáculo. Lo que faltó en Andalucía fue una clase empresarial con capacidad inversora, unas clases medias orientadas hacia la ética del trabajo y del éxito material. Lo que sobraba en todas las clases sociales fue una actitud señorial (en su peor sentido), que llevaba, por ejemplo, a vivir de rentas o a invertirlas en tierras como un valor de ostentación. Es así como un exceso inicial de servicios dificultaba llegar a una sociedad de servicios por sus pasos contados.	Translation - English We are used to speaking about the changes in society as if they were events which required proper names. Politicians, wars, regimes, governments, businesses and personalities are referred to in capital letters. It’s about a story of protagonists, heir to an old tradition of indoctrination of princes in which the annals which were written served to sing the praises of the royal dynasty. Today it is impossible to maintain such a naïve and personal interpretation of society. This is above all life and for that reason is about individuals.The transformations of a society are those that affect the daily lives of its inhabitants. This individual centred approach to the transformations of Spanish society during the last century is something that has been missing. This study will concentrate especially on the closing moments of each century. We’ll focus our attention on the often ignored southern regions of the peninsula, on Andalucia, both at the end of the nineteenth and the twentieth centuries and now. In 1900 there were few differences between Andalucian and Spanish society. If anything, the female population Andalucia in 1900 was more “modern” than the rest of Spain. Although women in Andalucia in those days rarely worked outside of the home, there were nevertheless some traditional areas of female employment in the cigarette factories and the food industry for example. Andalucia cannot be spoken of as the equivalent of an under developed nation, rather, a prematurely and therefore badly developed nation. A hundred years ago Andalucia already had certain elements considered necessary for development. There was a bourgeois commercial culture. There was capital in the sense of money and also in the sense of central cities. It boasted a history of educated elites from the professional classes, and centres of culture and learning. Andalucia even also had a select colony of foreigners involved in import and export. To all of this must be added an abundance of natural resources (although no coal) and a climate that favoured the production of certain crops allowing some agriculture and food production. All of this can be said of Andalucia and to a lesser extent about Spanish society in general. What seemed to be a catalyst for development was paradoxically an obstacle. What was missing in Andalucia was an entrepreneurial class with the capacity to invest, a middle class with a strong work ethic and dedicated to material success. What there was to excess in all social classes was a feudal attitude (in its worst sense) that led to, for example, living off income from tenants or investing it in land as a sign of ostentation. This is how an initial excess of resources has made it difficult to create a modern, developed society.

Source text - Spanish La despedida de soltera tenía que ser un banderín de enganche. Todo un símbolo de la reserva de toda una mujer. Porque María era toda una mujer – un caso único. Y Martín un pelma sin igual. ¿No había prohibido incluso, el muy plomo, que la boda se celebrase por todo lo alto, como los padres de María deseaban, como era lo normal, con cientos de invitados, que de lo contrario iba a ser una rareza? Y una rareza, encima, ñoña; una rareza testaruda y sosa de la provincia de Toledo: Martín, por lo visto, era medio manchego. Y María, encima, le daba la razón, e iban a casarse ladeados, apartados, con sólo la presencia de las dos familias – y Virginia quien, por supuesto, tenía que asistir –. Por consiguiente, la despedida de soltera tenía que ser inolvidable; la reserva especial de todo lo más único en amigas que tenía que durar toda la vida; jamás podría compartirse aquello con Martín. Dispuesta a todo, Virginia resumió su plan general (María la miraba sonriendo): “Lo que aquí se requiere es una merendola con mucha conversación descarrilada, cada loca con su tema y todas juntas comiendo mucho y hablándolo a la vez …¡Por eso tiene que ser en casa de tía Eugenia!” En lo de tía Eugenia – que, en realidad, era tía segunda de María, aunque Virginia se la había apropiado – coincidían las dos. Tía Eugenia estaba ya informada y había anunciado desde Montemayor, donde solía ir a las aguas, a grandes gritos telefónicos que, por supuesto, sólo ella en el mundo tenía una casa en condiciones y que en aquel mismo minuto dejaba aquellas aguas espantosas porque estaba hasta las narices de extremeñas reumáticas y paseítos al atardecer. Había dicho tía Eugenia que nada de tés ni cafés, que todo a base de champán y anises, una merienda-cena consistente, nada de nada frío ni tentempiés que hoy día pasas hambre en todas partes porque ya sólo sirven tentempiés … Virginia había colgado el teléfono feliz. El indiscutible talento de tía Eugenia para lo tumultuoso y lo incoherente combinado con su absurdo piso de Velázquez, no podían fallar. Y tenía que asistir el ama Rosi – el ama Rosi, la primera -. De entre todos los personajes de María, el preferido de Virginia era esta ama Rosi que ya había sido ama en casa de los abuelos de María y que ahora, rozando los ochenta, vivía en Navalcarnero con una hija casada. Era una ancianita rechoncha, de cara redonda y pelo liso recogido en un moño que no aparentaba tanta edad y que se trasladaba a todas partes a pasito seguidos, muy energéticos, con consistente movilidad de llanta articulada. Aunt Eugenia was already up to speed and had announced from Montemayor (where she went to take the waters) through loud shouts down the phone that of course she was the only person in the world who had a suitable house and at that very moment was leaving those horrible waters because she was sick to the back teeth of rheumatic women from Extremadura and evening walks. Aunt Eugenia said there was to be no tea or coffee, only champagne and anis, a decent dinner at a reasonable hour, absolutely nothing cold and no snacks, these days you’re always hungry because they only serve snacks. Virginia put the phone down contentedly. Aunt Eugenia’s indisputable talent for the disorderly and incoherent combined with her absurd home couldn’t fail. Also Rosi the housekeeper had to come, Rosi first on the list. Of all the characters in Maria’s life, Virginia’s favourite was Rosi, who had been a housekeeper in Maria’s grandparents’ house and now, nudging eighty lived in Navalcarnero with her married daughter. She was a stout little old lady with a round face and straight hair pulled back in a bun, who didn’t look her age and who pattered everywhere energetically with all the agility of clockwork toy.

Source text - Spanish A nivel internacional, una amplia mayoría de fabricantes ha apostado por máquinas comerciales con una potencia unitaria que oscila entre 500kW y 750kW. Se trata generalmente de turbinas que abandonaron el período de pruebas hace más de dos años y están dotadas de un generador asíncrono, un multiplicador, compensación de energía reactiva y regulación de potencia mediante giro de palas. El mercado de este tipo de aerogeneradores está liderado por tecnólogos daneses, teniendo a VESTAS como empresa líder del sector a nivel internacional. Los aerogeneradores dotados de generador asíncrono necesitan estar conectados a la red de distribución para poder funcionar. El rotor gira a una velocidad constante y en algunos diseños el generador incorpora un deslizamiento que permite al rotor variar la velocidad de giro hasta un 10% máximo. El funcionamiento del aerogenerador no coincide, pues, siempre con el óptimo técnico. Las turbinas dotadas de generador asíncrono ofrecen una elevada experiencia ganada a partir de los primeros diseños de 125 kW y 250 kW, una elevada fiabilidad y unos costes competitivos. Tienen en su contra la generación de energía reactiva, un diseño poco evolucionado y su dependencia respecto de la red. Existen, sin embargo, desarrollos tecnológicos alternativos, en particular los relacionados con la generación síncrona y la velocidad variable. Entre estos últimos destaca ENERCON como líder de este sector, si bien su ámbito de expansión se ha limitado a Alemania hasta hace pocos años. Las turbinas dotadas de generador síncrono representan una generación independiente no precisando de la red de distribución para la generación de energía. Este tipo de aerogeneradores representa un avance tecnológico respecto de los dotados de generación asíncrona, si bien requieren de un sistema electrónico de regulación más complejo y sofisticado. El rotor gira una velocidad variable adaptándose a las oscilaciones de la velocidad del viento por lo que siempre operan en el óptimo técnico. Este tipo de aerogeneradores presenta como ventajas su generación independiente y libre de potencia reactiva, su reducido nivel de ruido, velocidad variable con funcionamiento en el óptimo técnico y un diseño tecnológico avanzado. Como inconvenientes principales, destacan unos costes elevados en comparación con la generación asíncrona, un campo de pruebas reducido y unos mayores costes de operación y mantenimiento. Los fabricantes de este tipo de generadores reclaman igualmente una mayor producción (de hasta el 8%) merced al concepto de velocidad variable. Sin embargo, estudios recientes realizados con máquinas de igual densidad de potencia y tamaño de pala indican que en términos generales las ventajas de la velocidad variable respecto de la velocidad constante serían mínimas. Los aerogeneradores dotados de generador síncrono y velocidad variable son idóneos en zonas de redes débiles y extremos de una red.	Translation - English Technological evolution of wind turbines At the international level, a large majority of manufacturers have opted for commercial machines with a unitary power that oscillates between 500kw and 750kw. Most are turbines which completed a test period more than two years ago and are equipped with asynchronous generators, a multiplier, reactive energy compensation and rotating blades to regulate power output. The market for this type of generator is led by Danish technologists, with VESTAS the leading company at the international level. Aerogenerators equipped with an asynchronous generator must be connected to the distribution network in order to function. The rotor turns at a constant speed and in some designs the generator incorporates a sliding movement that allows the rotor to vary the speed up to 10% therefore these turbines do not always operate at peak power. Turbines equipped with asynchronous generators offer increased performance compared to the first 125kw and 250kw designs as well as increased reliability and competitive costs. Disadvantages include the generation of reactive energy, a rather unsophisticated design and their dependence on a distribution network. Nevertheless, there are alternative technological developments, in particular those related to synchronous generation a variable speed. Among them, ENERCON stands out as the leader in this sector although its area of expansion was limited to Germany until recent years. Asynchronous turbine generators can operate in ‘stand alone’ mode that doesn’t depend on the distribution network to generate energy. These types of aerogenerators represent a technological advance over asynchronous generators although they require a more complex and sophisticated electronic regulation system. The rotor turns at varying speeds, adapting to the oscillations of the speed of the wind and in this way operates at full capability. Advantages of this type of generator are the fact that they don’t produce reactive power their reduced noise level, variable speeds while working at optimum level and a technologically advanced design. Among the main disadvantages are high costs in comparison to asynchronous generators, limited service history and high operating and maintenance costs. The manufacturers of this type of generators point to higher levels of production (up to 8%) thanks to the variable speeds. However, recent studies of machines of equal power density and blade size indicate that in general terms the advantages of variable speeds over constant speeds are minimal. Aerogenerators equipped with asynchronous generators and variable speeds are suitable in areas with a weak distribution network or without access to the network.
