I pazienti affetti da sindrome di Guillain-Barré (SGB) vengono spesso sottoposti a terapia con immunomodulatori, come plasmaferesi o somministrazione di immunoglobuline per via endovenosa (IgEV). Plasmaferesi e IgEV sembrano essere ugualmente efficaci nell'abbreviare il decorso medio della malattia. Il trattamento combinato non ha mostrato alcuna riduzione statisticamente significativa dell'invalidità. La decisione di ricorrere alla terapia con immunomodulatori dipende dalla gravità e dalla velocità di progressione della malattia, oltre che dall'intervallo di tempo intercorso fra il primo sintomo e la presentazione clinica.
