Dès son arrivée a I'aéroport de Calcutta, Dominique Lapierre ne peut pas échapper aux guirlandes de fleurs. En s'approchant des fidèles venus I'accueillir, le voici qui prend sa respiration. Dans quelques minutes, on ne verra plus que son chapeau panama flotter au
milieu des fleurs de jasmin. Les bras ouverts, le rire a gorge deployee, Dominique Lapierre exulte. Il est ici une idole. celui qui a transformé la ville des pauvres.
Même un chef d'Etat ne peut rivaliser avec sa popularité. En 1989. François Mitterrand,
lors de sa visite officielle en Inde, en a fait I'expérience. A Calcutta, accompagné par
I'auteur de La Cité de la joie, Il se trompe en croyant recevoir un accueil triomphal. Les
pancartes brandies par les habitants massés le long de la route de I'aéroport souhaitent "la
bienvenue à Dominique”.

Dominique Lapierre could not escape the garlands of flowers ever since he landed at Calcutta airport. There he was holding his breadth while approaching the regular welcoming committee. In a few minutes, one could see nothing but his panama hat floating admist a sea of jasmine flowers. With outstretched arms Dominique Lapierre exults sending out a resounding laughter. Here, he is an idol, one who has transformed the life of the poor.
Even the head of a state cannot compete with his popularity as François Mitterrand learnt during his official visit to India in 1989. Accompanied by the author of “City of Joy” at Calcutta, he was mistaken about the grand welcome received. The placards held by the gathered residents all along the route from the airport read, “Welcome to Dominique”.
