An animal’s immune system is its main defence mechanism against infection, and stress impairs immune function. During long distance transport, animals are exposed simultaneously to a variety of stressors in a relatively short period of time.
Such stressors include fasting and water deprivation, mixing of unacquainted individuals, handling by humans, exposure to a novel environment, noise and vibration, forced physical exercise and extremes of temperature and humidity.
All these factors activate a stress response in the animal through different physiological pathways. The stress response is known to be additive, so the higher the number of simultaneous stress factors, the bigger the response.

Il sistema immunitario rappresenta il principale meccanismo di difesa per un animale e lo stress ne compromette tale funzione. Durante il trasporto su lunga distanza, gli animali sono esposti contemporaneamente ad una serie di fattori di stress in un periodo di tempo relativamente breve.
Tali fattori includono la privazione di cibo e acqua, il mescolamento con individui sconosciuti, la movimentazione da parte degli umani, l’esposizione ad un ambiente nuovo, a rumori e vibrazioni, l’esercizio fisico forzato e temperature ed umidità estreme.
Tutti questi fattori scatenano lo stress nell'animale attraverso diversi percorsi psicologici ed essendo dimostrato che tale risposta è sommativa, maggiore è il numero di fattori di stress contemporanei, più alta è la risposta.
