Climb Via
Climb Via
Climb Via is new phraseology for SIDs containing vertical constraints that draws from the established Descend Via phraseology for STARs. This is not a new procedure, but simply new phraseology being implemented to permit an air crew to fly a SID as published ( laterally, and vertically) as is the case with Descend Via on various vertically optimized STARs.
Like Descend Via, Climb Via will reduce controller phraseology by eliminating the need for the controller to restate restrictions at waypoints and fixes along an aircraft’s departure route and clears a pilot to navigate both laterally and vertically per the SID so as to comply with all restrictions depicted; or simply put “comply with all restrictions.”
Preparation – The Preflight
As with any preflight programming and preparation for all departure procedures, make certain you have selected the appropriate planned departure runway, SID procedure and en route transition. Brief and verify this information in accordance with your company policy and guidance.
Pre-departure clearances (PDC) are often amended. Make certain you verify the correct routing with your final issued clearance. Prior to taking the runway, verify the programmed runway in the FMS is in fact the runway you are departing off of.
Top Altitude – An Integral element to all Climb Via SIDs
Each Climb Via SID will contain an altitude that pilots will be expected to climb to, referred as the Top Altitude. Since this altitude is depicted on the SID profile, an initial altitude will not be assigned by ATC unless operational circumstances dictate a change. This altitude may or may not be associated with a waypoint or depicted graphically on the departure plate, but it can always be found in the narrative or textual section of the plate as “Maintain XXXXX”. If the altitude is not associated with a particular waypoint, it may not be included in the FMC database. In either case a pilot should place this altitude into their mode control panel as part of the preflight, or per your company procedures. Caution should be used when reviewing the procedure as more than one top altitude may be listed for different en route transitions contained on the SID.
Filed/Expected Altitude
Finally, it is important not to confuse the Top Altitude with the Filed/Expected altitude of the departure clearance or PDC. If the Filed/Expected altitude is FL350 for example, and you receive a Climb Via SID, the aircraft is only cleared to the SID’s Top Altitude, not FL350. The Filed/Expected altitude has no bearing on the SID unless communication is lost with ATC.
Phraseology for Initial Contact with ATC
When establishing initial contact with departure control, pilots should state they are “Climbing Via” the assigned SID and the top altitude they are climbing to: “DAL 123, out of
1,000 for 10,000 climbing via the WOLMN Departure”.
Amendments to your clearance
While climbing on the SID, as with any phase of flight, it may be possible for ATC to amend your clearance. The following examples provide a case where the aircraft has been vectored off of the lateral path and detail how an aircraft may be vectored back on the SID:
Cleared to rejoin at a waypoint where a crossing restriction is published
If you are cleared direct to a waypoint that has a crossing restriction associated with it, “DAL 123, cleared direct to NSIGN, climb via the NSIGN1 Departure”, you should climb the aircraft while proceeding direct to the waypoint so as to meet the restriction upon reaching the waypoint. The pilot should not wait until reaching a waypoint that contains a crossing restriction before climbing, but instead should climb en route to that waypoint to ensure meeting the altitude restriction upon arrival.
The pilot should then continue climbing to meet all published restrictions for the remainder of the SID.

Climb Via es una nueva fraseología para las SIDs (salidas instrumentales estandarizadas), conteniendo restricciones verticales a partir de la fraseología establecida en Descend Via para los STARs (arribos estandarizados). Este no es un nuevo procedimiento, sino simplemente una nueva fraseología, siendo implementada para permitir a una tripulación volar una SID tal como es publicada (lateral y verticalmente) como en el caso del Descend Via en varias STARs optimizadas verticalmente.
Como en el Descend Via, Climb Via, reducirá la fraseología del controlador eliminando la necesidad de restablecer restricciones en los puntos de notificación y espera a lo largo de la ruta de partida de la aeronave y autoriza al piloto a navegar tanto lateral como verticalmente de acuerdo a la SID como así también cumplir con todas las restricciones establecidas; o simplemente imponer “cumplir con todas las restricciones”
Preparación – El Pre vuelo
Como toda programación previa al vuelo y la preparación de los procedimientos de partida, asegúrese de tener seleccionada la apropiada y planeada pista de salida, el procedimiento SID y la ruta de transición. Resuma y verifique esta información de acuerdo a las políticas de sugeridas de su compañía.
Los permisos previos de partida (PDC) son a menudo enmendados. Asegúrese de verificar la correcta ruta con el último permiso emitido. Previo a tomar la pista, compruebe que la ruta programada en el FMS, sea de hecho la pista por la que está por despegar.
Altitud límite – Un elemento integral a todos los Climb Via SIDs
Cada Climb Via SID contendrá una altitud a la que los pilotos deberán esperar a ascender, referida como “Top Altitud” (Altitud Límite). Debido a que esta altitud es detallada en el perfil de la SID, no se asignará una altitud inicial por el ATC a menos una circunstancia operacional dicte un cambio. Esta altitud puede o no estar asociada a un punto de verificación detallado gráficamente en la carta de salida, pero siempre puede ser encontrada en la sección textual o narrativa de la carta como “Maintain XXXXX” Si la altitud no está asociada con un punto de notificación en particular, puede que no esté incluída en la base de datos del FMC. En cualquier caso un piloto debe colocar esta altitud en el panel modo de control como parte del pre vuelo o de acuerdo a los procedimientos de la compañía. Se debe prestar precaución al revisar los procedimientos ya que más de una altitud límite puede ser listada para las diferentes transiciones de ruta contenidas en la SID.
Altitud esperada/registrada
Finalmente, es importante no confundir Altitud Límite con Altitud Esperada/registrada del permiso de vuelo para la partida o el PDC. Si la Altitud Prevista es por ejemplo FL350, y usted recibe un "Climb Via SID", la aeronave está solo autorizada hasta la Altitud Límite de la SID, no FL350. La Altitud Prevista Registrada no tiene relación con la SID a menos que sea perdida la comunicación con el ATC.

El piloto debe entonces, continuar el ascenso para cumplir todas las restricciones publicadas para la SID restante.
