Christopher Columbus, too, is being made to suffer for being a man of his times. He did not know America was there, so he “discovered” it. Wrong. He “encountered” it say those who would spare the sensibilities of American Indians who had lived there for 12,000 years. He did not believe in racial equality, so he and his successors brutalised, infected and massacred Indians in the name of God. He did not realise that the discovery of America by Europeans would lead to the enforced rarity of the northern spotted owl and he would not have cared.
According to a new biography he imported the notion that man should dominate nature rather than live in harmony with it, as the Indians did. And he was a bad sailor. These revisionists have a case. It was a bit of terrible luck for the Americans that they were found by Spaniards at a time when the Spaniards were vicious and smug about it. (But would the Vikings have been any better if they had followed up their beachhead?) From the point of view of the average Aztec, the European encounter with America brought smallpox, bigotry, bullets and in due course eight-lane highways and “Dynasty”. In exchange it offered a few measly beads, horses, an end to the practice of human sacrifice and a plentiful supply of an addictive painkiller called alcohol. It was not much of a deal.
But it seems a bit unfair to blame Columbus for all this, or to celebrate the 500th anniversary of his voyage with such a sour face (“Columbus makes Hitler look like a juvenile delinquent,” says one hyperbolic spoilsport). In 1892 Americans named towns after Columbus and generally thanked their stars for the chance to ravage such a productive continent. In 1992 they are proposing to turn his 500th anniversary into a celebration of ethnic hypocrisy and ecological self-flagellation, as befits the age.

Auch Christoph Kolumbus musste darunter leiden, dass er ein Mann seiner Zeit war. Er wusste nicht, dass es Amerika gab, also „entdeckte“ er es. Falsch. Er ist „darauf gestoßen“, sagen diejenigen, die die Gefühle der Indianer schonen wollen, die dort seit 12.000 Jahren lebten. Er glaubte nicht an Rassengleichheit, was dazu führte, dass er und seine Nachfolger die Indianer brutal behandelten, sie mit Krankheiten infizierten und massakrierten, und das alles im Namen Gottes. Ihm war nicht bewusst, dass die Entdeckung Amerikas durch die Europäer zwangsläufig zur Ausrottung des Nördlichen Fleckenkauzes führen würde, und es hätte ihn wohl auch nicht gekümmert.
Einer neuen Biografie zufolge, führte er die Ansicht ein, dass der Mensch die Natur beherrschen sollte, statt mit ihr in Harmonie zu leben, wie es die Indianer taten. Außerdem war er ein schlechter Seemann. Diese Revisionisten haben ja nicht ganz unrecht. Die Amerikaner hatten ziemlich Pech, dass sie von den Spaniern zu einem Zeitpunkt entdeckt wurden, als diese grausam waren und sich darauf auch noch etwas einbildeten. (Aber hätten sich die Wikinger anders verhalten, wenn sie ihre Ausgangsstellung weiter verfolgt hätten?) Aus der Sicht des durchschnittlichen Azteken führte Europas Begegnung mit Amerika zu Pocken, Fanatismus, Kugeln und schließlich zu achtspurigen Highways und dem Denver-Clan. Im Gegenzug bot es ein paar armselige Perlen, Pferde, die Abschaffung des Menschenopfers und eine reichliche Versorgung mit einem süchtig machenden Schmerzmittel namens Alkohol. Kein besonders guter Tausch!
Es erscheint aber ein wenig ungerecht, Kolumbus die Schuld für all das zu geben oder den 500. Jahrestag seiner Reise mit solch einem griesgrämigen Gesicht zu begehen („Kolumbus lässt Hitler wie einen jugendlichen Straftäter aussehen“, sagt einer der maßlos übertreibenden Spielverderber). 1892 benannten die Amerikaner Städte nach Kolumbus und dankten gewöhnlich dem Himmel für das Glück, einen derart ertragreichen Kontinent plündern zu können. Im Jahr 1992 wollen sie seinen 500. Jahrestag in eine Feier ethnischer Heuchelei und ökologischer Selbstgeißelung umwandeln, so wie es sich für unsere Zeit geziemt. |
